Vinyl Tire on Styrene Melt

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 1/24 Revell 1937 Ford Delivery Van and opened it up to find the tires had started to melt some of the plastic on the chrome tree. Separated it all to stop the process...

As I understand it, all vinyl tire parts have a plasticizer in it to keep it soft, and the manufacturers use whatever chemicals are in their stock during a production run. Some plasticizers will attack styrene, others won’t. Some outgas or evaporate, others don’t. Luck of the draw...

As I last saw, there’s not a lot anyone can do besides resin cast a new set of tires and rims, so this is a dilemma.

Has anyone got any newer or other tricks?
