Waterslide decals without a gloss varnish basecoat

In this video I'm showing how to apply decals without a gloss varnish basecoat. I used older decal for demonstration purpose, best results are achieved with highest quality decals.

Not a single close up photo? What is this? I guess I’ll have to take your word that a gloss coat isn’t needed?

This does "make sense".  It seems (multi angle close ups of surface before, and after hand polishing would be extremely helpful) to work ok..  However, It would seem to be extremely labor intensive to work an entire kit.  

 

Gloss coats and this type of flat paint "polishing" are making the case to use a more satin, or full gloss paint so that these steps could, for the most part be skipped.

the argument against that would be color coverage. Because of the leveling agents in gloss paints, they tend to pull away from small details like panel lines. And they tend to go on thicker. So there’s a definite argument to make some thin coats with a flat paint. Mask and spray all your colors. This would leave you with a uniform color, thin coat, smooth surface. And then put on a clear gloss that does t show if it pulls a fraction of an inch away from a panel line.  This can actually lead to thinner overall paint coverage with more uniform results.

Since I started using MrPaint paints, I don't gloss anymore... no problems with silvering, even without polishing.
