That is missing now. People are thinking only of themselves. We need to think about our collective survival. Things like stealing sanitizer from hospitals is just plain criminal. The article noted above is correct. Mixed signals is causing people to act irrationally. Obviously we need consistent messaging and the fostering of a spirit of cooperation for the good of all. Unfortunately, many Americans have developed a "me first at any cost" attitude. I don't know what to do about it myself. Since the hoarding has started, it has been hard for me to find some basic food stuffs. I think I will be OK though. One nice thing, I went to Whole Foods this morning just a few minutes after 8AM, when they usually open. Got to the door and there was a sign saying they changed their hours and now didn't open till 9AM. There was a store worker there and he said, "No problem, we are letting some people in early, you just need an ID." What they were doing is letting in older people before 9 so they got a chance to get some food without having to deal with crowds of crazies. I thought that very considerate of them. So I got to get a few things and get out before the crowds. Edited March 18, 2020 by Mstor

So I got to get a few things and get out before the crowds. I've heard of other businesses letting older folks get in to purchase what they need so they don't need to deal with the crazies. I think that is outstanding consideration, well appreciated (even though I'm not [yet] in that group). We need to take care of those folks who have contributed so much to where we've gotten to today. They shouldn't have to put up with those people who think nothing of elbowing, clawing and scratching their way (both literally and figuratively) to get what they think they need. SBARC
Once this virus really starts spreading.....everyone will be staying home and the stores will get restocked. I'm hoping I can buy some rubbing Alcohol then. The stores in my area have begun to reserve the first hour for seniors and folks with disabilities, which is good to see. As for TP....I have an $80 bidet toilet seat coming in the mail I plan to install. That pretty well makes TP redundant.
niart17
I think part of the issue isn't so much that there's totally a me first attitude going on as-in the worst of people. It's just that usually in times like these we GATHER in order to help each other and work through it together. When you're told not to gather in groups that takes away a basic human instinct and leads to what appears as selfish behavior. Not saying there isn't some of that going on as well, but I think mostly it's been pretty calm under the circumstances. I've seen worse cases of selfishness at black Friday sales. This has been just weird. Just my 2 cents.

Dutch
This sounds like a great idea for a new group build. Armored vehicle convoys delivering TP. B-52s & B-2s dropping multiple strings of TP for TICs. SSBNs firing missiles with MIRV TP warheads. Or redneck 4x4 trucks for local TP delivery. Get cracking everyone! 😎 Oh, and don't forget to wash your hands! Edited March 20, 2020 by Dutch

Talk about stupid. They should seal off the beaches with all the partiers still there and let them all party themselves to death. If any of them are contagious, they could spread it like wildfire and then take it home and infect more. Better to just let them camp out on the beach and the hotels there and isolate them. I'm sure they won't mind. Edited March 20, 2020 by Mstor
Curt B
How many of you have been directly affected by this virus? I don't necessarily mean having the virus, or knowing someone who has been confirmed to have it, (although I'd be interested to know how many of us have), but other directly impacting conditions. For me, I've been directed to work from home as of this past Wednesday. I took my dad (90 years old), this morning, to get a regularly scheduled blood test, and he was taken, but the doctor's office was completely empty, with warning signs on the doors, only letting the patients themselves go inside, and the staff was all wearing surgical masks, so my dad said. My wife went shopping, and Walmart and Smith's (we live in Las Vegas) were completely out of paper products, fresh meat, and they had minimal canned and glass bottled food stuffs (soups, spaghetti sauces, etc.) I obviously don't know where this is going, but here in Las Vegas, ALL the casinos are shut down, and the hotels are on their way to being shut down as well. I never thought I'd see that in my lifetime.
SBARC
I do not live in a hot spot (Vancouver Island)...we have 22 known cases for 1 million people. Mass testing is not being done, so the true number is maybe about 440 (assuming 5% of infected people are known). The only people I see wearing masks are Chinese nationals speaking Mandarin (I guess they understand what is coming) and folks over 70 (they look truly terrified). I see much fewer cars out on the roads and fewer people out walking around....mostly people between 20 and 40 going for walks along the waterfront at sunset and practicing social distancing. I can not believe what is coming....it is impossible to wrap my head around. Don't count on warmer weather stopping covid-19....Thailand is a warm country and this virus is spreading just fine there. It is also spreading easily in the Philippines and Manila is currently locked down. My city has a massive elderly population due to our mild winters, so I know the chances of getting into a hospital if I am sick are nil. Thankfully the elderly seem to also understand this and for the most part they are staying home. It is a shame western governments didn't see what was happening in China in December and ramp up emergency production of masks and other critical items. There are endless examples of people returning from trips and not bothering to self isolate for 14 days upon their return home. Their stupidity has helped doom the rest of us to the nightmare that is coming. I hope you all make it to the other side of this surreal nightmare.

We are bringing this on ourselves by allowing this BS behavior. China just arrested an Australian women and is deporting her because she went for a jog (without face mask as well). Her company (Biogen) just announced they had fired her after pressure from the Chinese government. That’s a good illustration of why China appears to now have this under control and here in the US, folks are now talking about being under lockdown for over a year with a death toll far surpassing China’s. But hey, at least in America, we’ve got the right to party. Edited March 20, 2020 by 11bee
SBARC
First let me say....saving peoples lives is the most important thing regarding this virus and the economy if very much a secondary detail. Everyone staying home will destroy the economy. Many people will get this and get over it after a few weeks. In theory those people would be immune to the virus and able to go back to work and keep the economy going. But without mass testing, you will not know who had the virus and is now immune. Everyone staying home for 1 year will be devastating to the economy. Also critical staff should be tested, if they had the virus and recovered with mild symptoms (felt like a cold) then they could relax knowing they are immune to being re-infected. The lack of massive testing will cost many many lives and cause more damage to the economy. Germany has done massive amounts of testing and their death rate is VERY low.
