Do you have enough toilet paper?

I'm happy to hear the Canadian government has blocked all ships with more than 500 people from operating in Canadian waters.  This means all cruise ships and larger ferries.  People really need to stay home and let this thing pass.

Please do grocery shopping for the older members of your family and friends, we do not need them out wandering in grocery stores etc in the coming weeks and months.

I'm in a similar situation (messy health for the past 10+ years), trying to find if I have an autoimmune disease that is causing everything, though my doctor says that we may never find what it is (for example, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.). Consequently, I'm a bit concerned about how the virus could affect my already vulnerable health, including the fact that I have members of my family that do not want to accept the seriousness of the whole situation we're going through not only locally but also, globally.

Anyhow, keep up your faith brother and keep modelling!!!

Thanks! Quite a way to live, isn't it. 😐🤔

Am still modeling 🙂 Lately it has been mostly railroad stuff with large pieces, making and adding some important bits such as crosshead guide hangers/braces to a couple relatively inexpensive G scale 4-6-0 steam locomotives bought a decade back when the disability settlement hit the bank.

Made a round trip from here in mid-Missouri to Kansas City and back on Wednesday, someone else did the 200 mile round trip driving, and my body is still as wiped out as if, I dunno, ran three marathons in a row on the same day.
So my brain, itself almost too wiped out to function, I'm not up to focusing enough to even drive around our farm burg, is wondering is that my normal "price of admission" for that much activity in a day or is something different going on?

Note: I don't watch TV, don't even have one, it's too noisy, chaotic, and flashy light, for my autism, so what is happening in coronavirus news, fear mongering, accurate & useful information, there is unknown.
But, the email company does provide news articles they collect from various sources, so I have looked at some of those.

Today this week my brain is still too fatigued to evaluate and assign value judgments to any of the news items.

But some of the human behavior reported, yeah, it's nuts.

I'm one of those with, what did you call it, "messy health" (I like that phrase). The coronavirus does have me concerned. Should I catch it, I am fairly certain that I would probably get very sick, maybe even end up in the hospital.

Welcome to the fellowship! Sorry you had to join us.

My main concern, other than my own health, is that people of little means can get the care and necessities of life that they need.

That IS a concern in our county seat farm burg - a couple months ago brought the sudden closure of our little hospital, ER, physical therapy clinic, rural health clinic.
Nearest hospitals and ERs are in the university town around 30 miles away.
Closure was due to a constellation of factors, loss of income, mismanagement, structural problems with old building, plus the university hospital in that about 30 miles away city being essentially a health care provider Borg.
So, the doctors and physical therapists who have 12 years experience with and knowledge of my quirky body are all gone, some took jobs as far as 400 miles away.

And speaking of means, since my health has always been a bit of a mess, I've never been able to do a middle class job, which makes my Social Security Disability which is based on my working income, an amount which is 11 dollars a month below the poverty level for a household of 1, according to values supplied by Department of Health and Human Services.
(for some odd reason they refuse to count my 2 orange rescue tabbies as household members)
(on the other hand, those 2 household members offer no devaluing or mocking of health concerns)
(and they do snuggle with me when I don't feel good) 😺😺 (and even when I do feel good) 🙂

I think the trick is to be prepared for the worst as best as you can.  Then lay low and hide out until this storm passes.

Don't worry about the stuff you can not control, just focus on your own situation.  This virus will pass.

Interesting to see how some people state that the media is the root cause for the hysteria and the panic.

COVIN-19 is killing people. Let's just get that fact put there. It may not be Spanish Flu type numbers but it is killing people that are affected by it and at a fast rate. This is a new virus that no one has ever been exposed to before and we don't have immunities built up to counter it.

If that's not a reason to be hysterical what is? The media doesn't have to create the panic as there are people who will panic just based off of the facts. Let them. Why waste energy being upset about it?

You must be seeing different news casts than I'm seeing. Yes, this is something to be concerned about and take precautions for. It just doesn't help anything when you've got the media desperately trying to up the body count as high as they can.

And no, I'm not upset about it. Annoyed and disgusted, yes. Fred K.

The news I read on the Hill (a right leaning site) said 250 died in Italy in the last 24 hours, up from 200 in the previous 24 hours.

while I believe Iran and China have not been transparent in their reporting, Italy and Korea  have been. Italy is near a breaking point having to decide who gets treatment and who doesn’t. Who lives and who dies. Italy has the highest elderly population in Europe, in percentages similar to the US. For a country that cherishes our elders and our greatest generation I’m appalled at those who think it’s “just the flu”

Koreans have been testing 10,000  A day to get ahead of this, and have started to see their cases drop in the last few days. We’ve tested less than 7,000 across the whole country since this started.

while shutting down travel from China was the right call, we the wasted the extra time we had and failed to ramp up testing and prepare for it here.

Today I went grocery shopping, I was appalled by what I didn't see in stores--

Walmart: the entire aisle with toilet paper and paper towels was completely wiped out (no pun intended);  the aisle with baby wipes, the same, which is horrible!.  The aisle with canned ready to eat pasta, box dinners including macaroni & cheese, empty. The frozen food aisle of pizzas and box dinners looked like a war zone.  No vitamin C pills in the store. Pet food and supplies amazingly stocked, so obviously no one is worried about animals starving.

Aldi:  not one loaf of bread, hamburg, or hot dog buns. Macaroni & cheese gone.  Bottled water, absolutely none. They did have some toilet paper (scored!) but no tissues.  On the bright side the dairy cases were fully stocked, so I guess these products aren't a part of the American diet.

Kroger: what's bread, tissues, paper towels, and bottled water?

Meijer: no bottled water.

Walgreens: I found bread.

Oh totally agree with you Fred! My apologies if there was any confusion as I was not trying to bash anyone or criticize their thoughts. I have heard too many people demean the media and legitimate news sources over real issues for too long I suppose. But you're absolutely right on all of those points.

Hmm, interesting,

Expert highlights traditional Chinese medicine in fight against novel coronavirus

GUANGZHOU, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Renowned Chinese respiratory specialist Zhong Nanshan on Tuesday highlighted the studies on traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) in the fight against novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Speaking at a press conference held in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Zhong said the herbal prescription called "Pneumonia No. 1" applied on Jan. 23 had proved effective in the treatment of COVID-19 patients in the province.

According to Zhong, researchers are testing on the already widely used TCM drugs, such as Liushenwan and Lianhuaqingwen, to find out whether they can kill the virus, reduce the virus' access to the cell and lower the incidence of a cytokine storm, meaning the massive inflammation which may lead to death.

These tests may provide some evidence for the application of the TCM during the early and middle stages of the COVID-19, he said.

Yang Zifeng, a professor with the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health and a member of Zhong's team, said through in vitro experiments on 54 existing TCM drugs available on market, researchers have found five that can effectively inhibit the novel coronavirus infection.

Objective

In this study we execute a rational screen to identify Chinese medical herbs that are commonly used in treating viral respiratory infections and also contain compounds that might directly inhibit 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), an ongoing novel coronavirus that causes pneumonia.

No, their is a reason for this run.  It's psychological.

Think they would require rather different machinery.

Playing in Google found no, zero, source references to that, but did find article of interest from Japan.
Closing statement says much,

Regardless of whether information doing the rounds on social media is pointed out to be wrong, if products are still disappearing from stores then people will panic. This is a sharp example of the terrors of the so-called "information society."

https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20200306/p2a/00m/0na/028000c

Edit, oh, yeah, middle of article says this,

Quote

From around the end of February, false information started flying around on social media claiming that the raw materials for masks and toilet paper are the same, and that almost all of the toilet paper that is sold in Japan comes from China. The claims spread to many people, and reportedly led some to start buying up stocks of the products. Hayashi said that this reaction "is all a big mistake."

Masks are manufactured from non-woven fabrics, whereas toilet paper is made from a mix of around 40% pulp and 60% used paper. A large amount of pulp is imported in from North and South America, and obtaining it is reportedly in no way an issue.

The used paper all comes from domestic sources, and there is said to be no concern over supplies. Toilet paper made in China makes up just 1.3% of the rolls available in Japan, and imported toilet paper in general is just 2.3% of national stocks. Which is to say that some 97% of toilet paper in Japan is domestic product. Even if there is a fall in imports from China as a consequence of the coronavirus, the effect will be very small.

Still have not found that, but did find this, https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51706629

Quote

Japanese electronics giant Sharp is to use a TV factory to make surgical masks amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Its parent company Foxconn has already done the same in China to supply its own workers as they make iPhone parts.

Sharp's high-end clean rooms in Japan will turn out 150,000 masks a day within weeks, Japanese media report, as domestic supplies have been exhausted.

Experts, however, warn that such masks do little to protect against an airborne infection.

And I think an Important little bitty easily overlooked Detail nugget is,

Sharp's high-end clean rooms

So, now we need to research how many toilet paper factories have clean rooms ...

They will not protect you, but all medical staff wear them for protection?

I think the masks do offer protection, but there is a shortage and they want all the masks to go to the medical staff.

Masks, THAT would be nice....if not overly effective.

I still have to report to work, with over a thousand criminals who tend not to wash, live in filth (not all of course) in the street, Immigration holds, mental health. With ZERO protective gear.

All in big rooms with no outside ventilation.  Glad I booked this weekend of weeks ago, but still have 12 hour shifts later this week.

Its not like we can just send the criminals home for 2 weeks.

Well, I went to the grocery store this morning, early to try and beat the crowds. Boy was I in for it. The place was already packed. Not a roll of toilet paper, paper towels, or facial tissue to be found. The shelves were stripped bare. What is wrong with people. Don't they have any consideration for others? No, they just want to hoard for themselves. What about us disabled who can't get out as much and can't go searching from store to store. By the time I've gone through one store, I am in too much pain to go anywhere but home.

I'm sorry, but I'm pissed. Lizard brain driving people to irrational behavior. Pretty soon people will be getting shot for a roll of toilet paper. I just wanted at least one package of T-paper cause I'm getting low. Oh well, got plenty of old paperback books. Guess we can start tearing those up.

The regular surgical masks you see everyone using will protect against droplet contamination. They won't stop virus size stuff. Medical staff use the regular type when there is a possibility of droplet contamination, which in a hospital or doctor's office is prevalent with people coughing, sneezing, etc., but these masks do not fit fit snugly, so air can pass in around the mask. N95 surgical masks fit snugly and are better at preventing droplet and particulant contamination down to the 0.3 micron level. Even these, though, are not a guarantee that one won't get exposed. for more info, see here:

Having just about everything delivered for that matter (Amazon is my friend). My lady friend and I don't have a lot of room, so stockpiling groceries is kinda out.

I can't stress this enough and this is what a lot of people are missing

"are you afraid of the corona virus?! what a loser!"

No I'm worried about catching ANYTHING at a time when our medical system is already  severely stressed and having to go seek help at the highly infectious area.

I don't even want one of my kids to need stitches. So theres nothing wrong with playing it overly cautious right now because people still have not caught on as the gripe about toilet paper; YOU ARE OPERATING WITHOUT A SAFETY NET RIGHT NOW.

HEB, the Texas based grocery store here, released a statement asking it's customers to not be hoarders and buy up not just all the toilet paper but other items as well. Said to please be considerate of others. This "$hit" is out of control.
