Venezuelan Navy Patrol Ship Sinks After Collision With Cruise Ship

An encounter between the Venezuelan patrol vessel GC-23 Naiguata and the ice-class expedition cruise ship RCGS Resolute resulted in the patrol vessel's sinking, according to the government of Venezuela

..

In a statement, RCGS Resolute's operator asserted that the cruise ship was approached by an armed Venezuelan Navy vessel at a position about 13 nm off Isla de Tortuga. The Resolute was drifting with one engine idling and one engine undergoing maintenance. The Venezuelan vessel ordered Resolute's crew to follow to the port of Puerto Moreno, Isla de Margarita. As this would result in a deviation from the cruise ship's planned voyage, the master sought to confirm with the shipowner before complying with the request.

While the Resolute was consulting with the home office, the Venezuelan Navy vessel allegedly fired shots and then purposely collided with the Resolute's starboard side. The ramming was repeateded, the firm said, until the Venezuelan vessel encountered Resolute's hardened bulbous bow and sustained severe damage.

Cruise ship sunk Venezuelan Navy ship after being fired at and rammed. Don’t mess with RESOLUTE.

While the RCGS RESOLUTE sustained minor damages, not affecting vessel’s seaworthiness, it occurs that the navy vessel suffered severe damages while making contact with the ice-strengthened bulbous bow of the ice-class expedition cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE and started to take water…
NAIGUATA sank, but RESOLUTE, as it came out, didn’t flee, she “…remained for over one hour in vicinity of the scene and reached out to MRCC Curacao, and sailed away only after receiving the order to resume passage full ahead by the MRCC and that further assistance is not required”.
So, there’s nothing much else left to talk about, except to laugh and to applaud RESOLUTE Master. Not many – if any – similar cases in naval history, when defenceless passenger ship sunk Navy battleship, and went away with it.

Please be informed that there was an unfortunate accident on our MD2 Service involving vessel MILANO BRIDGE 11W. The accident occured at Pusan, Korea terminal on the 6th of April and therefore a vessel change will be implemented in week 15.

NYK OWL 12W will be replacing MILANO BRIDGE. She will be omitting Pusan and will be phasing in at Qingdao on April 8, 2020.

We took immediate actions in order to support your export boxes from Pusan so please find below our recovery plan:

Pusan - Shanghai on AR1 SM VANCOUVER connecting to MD2 NYK OWL

also found it hit a ship before hitting the crane, https://maltashipnews.com/2020/04/06/maritime-accidents-mega-container-ship-milano-bridge-mishap-at-busan-s-korea-06-04-2020/

EDIT: oh, it hit the ship between hitting cranes.

On Monday 6th April, 2020 afternoon the 2018 built 365 metre long mega container ship MILANO BRIDGE contacted gantry crane 85 at Busan New Port container terminal while proceeding to berth 7 with pilot on board and assisting tugs. Then she contacted berthed container ship SEASPAN GANGES, and moving on momentum further on, contacted cranes 81 and 84. Crane 85 collapsed, cranes 81 and 84 were derailed, crane 85 operator was slightly injured. SEASPAN GANGES left port shortly after accident, understood damages were slight or none.

I noticed the prop still turning long after the collision - I wonder if the accident resulted from not being able to stop/throttle the engines?

From what I read, the ship came into the channel too hot.  You can see the poor tug just getting pulled along for the ride.  I believe she was in full reverse but given the ship was completely unloaded, she was riding so high in the water that her prop has reduced effectiveness.

Would be a good relation to the movie Up Periscope and the Murmansk Brushing Incident.

I love that movie..... And it's "Down Periscope"
