Finally; a new 1/72 Phantom

Recommended Posts

With my F-4B on its way, I'm digging into research once more. I found this film that's got some great footage from the Independence during her WestPac deployment to the Gulf of Tonkin. There's a fair amount of the Phantom in there, but also lots of Scooters and Intruders. I wish they had shown a little more of the Jolly Rogers Phantoms during the deployment portion, but it's great stuff none the less.

For those who have not seen this take a look at the Jet AC ejection seat thread in Jet Aircraft.  the F-4 part is towards the bottom of the first page.  I'm debating on putting in a index of seats covered...

It covers the Phantom seats over time with photos of the seats and F-4's

enjoy,

I love the box art for the F-4F!

I will like to see their suggestions for paint for the Norm 81 scheme. Not easy to match.

And the F-4F boxing is listed as "LIMITED" while the E release does not say that. Another obvious marketing ploy to divide us from our money. 🤭

Yeah, works on me EVERY Time.

Next logical step is the G model followed by S, and any kind of marketing ploy will work on me ... again.

Great news -- based on what I see in this new video. it appears the new Phantoms will include the gun gas purge door. Other good news is that the inboard slats are separate pieces, so FineMolds may have graciously and fastidiously planned that aspect to allow those pieces to be tailored specifically to either the F-4E or F-4S.

The bad news, the misshapen wing tanks are the same as in previous iterations.

What a great team at FineMolds!

... weren't the slats different on the late E from the slats on the Navy S model?

Both the inboard and outboard slats differed between USAF/Foreign and USN. Great illustrations and discussion here.

Milo, have you ever posted on the Scale Model Paint Masks forums?

I'm not Milo. but I have posted on that forum, including canopy masks for the FM Phantoms, long and short nose. A great. although barely visited, site.

Interesting new video from FineMolds attempting to explain the differences between hard and soft wing Phantoms. YouTube auto translate is rough, but good enough to understand most of what is being discussed.

Looks good for a future F-4S since some time is spent outlining the difference between USAF and USN slats.

No mention is made of the Big Question: late-late thick strengthened wing ...  or early-late wing strap?

What physically are the indications on the wing that it is strengthened (vice the strap)?

Hello Gene,

here's a build of mine. It's the Hasegawa 1/72 F-4E to which I added a scratch built belly strap. It is very visible and potrudes from the rest of the belly and wing. After 71-0237 all subsequently built soft wing Phantoms received a re-enforced wing box. There you won't see anything from the outside. Hence all surviving E' with a lower serial numbers and ALL GS have the strap. The GS were all converted from low tine E models which started out their life as hard wing E's

Best regards

Michael

Thanks, Michael.

I "thought" I had read "somewhere" that there was a "bump" where the wing strap formerly was on the fuselage mid sectio9n ... where the wing "torque box" is.
