Fightertown decals 48-080 Vf-211 sized for?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am wanting to build the VF-211 jet from FTD 48-080 Fightertown usa part 2.

Just wondering if this sheet is designed to fit the tamiya kit? If not would the Checkerboard rudder decals be able to be trimmed to fit?

Also the placement guide shows it as having the grill sytle gun vents. However the detail and scale book has a photo of what appears to be the same jet wit NACA vents. Although i cant make out the BuNo. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks as always.

Tom

Don't know about what kit the decals were sized for but for the vent, it depends on the time frame you are doing. The same F-14A (BUNO) would have had both styles (or even all three) during their career, it just depends on the time frame. What time frame are the decal's for?

I believe they're sized for the Hasegawa however if you messaged @Brian P: Fightertown Decals he would be more than happy to help out what needs to be done in order to fit them to any kit .

The VF-211 option is 1996.

Timeframe is 1996/1997.

FTD sheet has the BU as 161271 as NG100 1996. Mike Crutch's Book has 161271 NG100, July 1993 to October 1995. Changing to NG112 December 1996 (14 month gap). Same book has 162588 join VF-211 19th June 1996, NG100 August 96 to September 1997. I have photos of 162588 with NACA vents wearing the same paint job as 161271 on the FTD sheet that has grill vents.

So wondering if the CAG jet was swapped somewhere or if the profile should have NACA vents.

Here is 161271 in 1994 with NACA vents.

Here she is in 1998

Both with NACA and both with different a different MODEX. I would believe it stands on good authority that the decals are correct for the precise time that it is being depicted and FTD would make any corrections if they were presented to them. If you want to change the BUNO to 162588 it probably won't hurt anyone's feelings either as there is a photo of it in the CAG livery.

For that time frame it would have the newer (NACA) vents.

As for aircraft move around, it is quite common for USN/USMC aircraft to move around and change Modex's. I've worked on the same birds while in three different squadrons over a ten year time span. When I was in VF-143, we changed some aircraft at least three times during the four years I was there.

1 Sized to Hasegawa because the Tamiya kit didn't exist when the sheet was made.

2 Naca vents. Don't know how that didn't get caught on the instructions and no one's noticed in 4+ years its been out. That mistake shouldn't have happened to begin with.

3. buno is correct 161271. 1000%. I'm looking at a clear picture of it. I shot VF-24 and VF-211 at Miramar, Fallon and on the boat from late 1993 until Aug 1996. 100 didn't become 16255 until after the squadron moved to Oceana, so Dec 96 could be correct. But for the date on the sheet, it was 161271.

4. The checkerboard will fit Tamiya mostly. The Tamiya tail is wider and shorter so some adjustment will happen.

fyi, I can't post the big pictures here and I'm not resizing pictures to post but I can tell you VF-211 changed the paint job several times in 94-97. It had one scheme until June 95, a repaint Nov 95, repaint in May 96 and Aug 96. Late Nov/Dec 100 switched bunos.

Brian,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and post a picture. Looking forward to building the 211 jet from that sheet. I built the Aardvark from the same sheet and as always the decals worked perfectly.

Cheers!
