Just wondering why some IRST ball has a hard cover like the Rafale and J-10, while others like the Mig-29 and Su-27 has a glass cover?

So the hard cover can be removed during flight? thanks

Of course... čÖé┬áNo, in training flight, they cover it,and when they are on mission, technicians remove it.But who knows, maybe they can also remove it in flight čśë┬áThere is also cover for Russian IRST,and they use it when they are not on combat mission.I know for MiG-29, 100% is like that.I have┬ásome 11 years of experience┬áon MiG-29,so I know about it.
