Three tanks on a Super Hornet...common?

Recommended Posts

It depends on the time period you are doing, for years the most common configuration was what was called "double ugly ", a tank on centerline and a tank on the right inboard station (sta 8). By not having a tank on the left side this allowed the ATFLIR a better field of view.

Also, the tank configuration depends on where the squadron is, at home they may fly just one tank, on the boat but not in the AOR they may fly three, in the AOR - double ugly.

And AFAIK on the very first combat cruise, VFA-115 flew with just the centerline.

But that is 2001-2002 timeframe during OEF.

Here's the 2017 shot of the same squadron. You can basicly check the seaforces for the picutres of squadron You want to model in the beggining. This will give You some ideas regarding what is carried and how.

I notice some SH squadrons nowadays fly without fuel tanks. Just not on the combat missions. I read it's because of the drag that basicly nullifies the added gas rangewise.

Would the following be a legal load?

Double ugly tanks, two GBU-24's on the center wing stations, and two AGM-65's outboard?

No, AGM-65's are only authorized on the mid-board stations (sta 3 and 9) on the Super Hornet.

You can do double ugly, GBU-24's on mid-board, and AIM-7, AGM-88, AIM-120 or GBU-12 on outboard if you want to do GBU-24's on mid-board.
