A new (and accurate) kit of this type is long overdue, but I hope the US MSRP for this subject is more reasonable than the same manufacturer's recent AH-1Z.

Don't see any obvious major flaws in the test build photos, though a pure plan view would help confirm better how the cockpit/canopy compares to its competition.  Quantity and variety of decal options is promising, although I believe some of those (notably VFC-13) will need the "late version" kit with extended LERX for accuracy.  Always nice to have more "MiG-28" options 😊

I wondered about that too, but I guess it's just another instance of two-bus-syndrome.

Last I heard about Wolfpack's kit is that they had completed CAD stage. DreamModel's kit seems to be farther along.

Hoping they're going to be good. We've waited for a decent F-5E for far too long.

Well I've been waiting for a new tool 72nd F-5E/F for a long long time. I've really been looking forward to the Wolfpack kit, so this kit really came out of nowhere. It looks pretty good from the pics, but as Quixote74 noted, all of the markings may not be correct depending on whether or not one gets the extended wing LEXs to go with the shark nose cone they mentioned as included. F-5E/Fs either had the round nose cone and no LEXs, or the shark/duckbill nose cone and the extended LEXs. I've only ever seen one jet that had a mix (extended LEXs with the round nose cone), though there may very well be more. Also, I noticed that the air brakes are closed. Hopefully whoever built the model just glued them up, because they are normally down when the jet is on the ground and shut down. This is a subject that is long overdue for a new kit. Let's see what they did with it! Fred K.

Further to what I just posted, regarding the decal sheet: The VFC-13, VFC-111, Topgun movie jet and probably (I'd have to see a photo to be sure) the South Korean jet would all have the extended LEXs and shark nose cone. The USAF 425th TFTS silver jet, the Iranian jet, and USAF aggressor #57 would all have the round nose cone and no LEXs as correctly depicted by the built model. Also, the Topgun movie jet would not have a radar screen on the main instrument panel. HTH, Fred K.

Wouldn't the twin tiger heads be applicable to the F-5F only? Wonder if the decal sheet shown covers more than one kit. Hmm.

It’s for the Korean option. Their single seat KF-5E have this on the side of the fuselage

The South Korean jet is an early one, so without shark nose and extended LEX. But the managed to get the decals wrong though: its serial is 50-460 and not 05-460.....

When it comes to ROKAF Tigers:

F-5E = early version (standard nose, standard LEX)

KF-5E = late version (shark nose, extended LEX)

So based on the sprue shots:

- No nose cannons

- No late-pattern LERX (needed for at least some of the provided decal options)

- GBU-10s which would never be a prctical load for an F-5E

- Mk. 80-something "slick" and "snakeye" bombs that seem to have been patterned after a preschooler's drawings

All this for a reported €45 price tag?

No thanks.

Oh man...... what we're they thinking by not dropping the speed brakes? Unless the jet is powered up, they are nearly always open. That's a big let down for me anyway. This sounds like a job for Quickboost, or another resin outfit! I'm glad to see the RF as well! Hopefully there's a two seater in the works. It looks like it because the rear counterweight is on the sprue next to the nose wheel. Although the RF uses it as well. I see that they've included both nose cones, which is great, but I don't see any leading edge  extensions to go with the shark nose. Thankfully those are easily scratch built. Otherwise its looking pretty good. Hopefully they'll be some resin fixes available for it, and it doesn't get completely ignored like the 32nd Kitty Hawk kits.....  Fred K.

Oooh...... ouch! $55 USD??? Yeah, I think I'll be passing on this too. Either that or waiting until the price gets slashed because they can't sell them at that crazy price. Another let down.... Fred K.

The big weakness in the Italeri kit was always the lack of the canopy opening/closing mechanism. I can't tell for sure, but the two parts just above the wheels and fuel tanks might be parts for that actuator. Either that or the landing gear.

Some German shop cites 40 EUR/48 USD. A Polish shop cites 45 EUR/54 USD. HLJ's pre-order price translates to 42 EUR/50 USD.

Yeah....nah.

I like the F-5. A lot. I've been hoping for a decent new 1/72 Tiger for ages. But it looks like this one' s dead before it even got off the ground.

Guess it's back to hoping for Wolfpack's kit. That won't be cheap either, but it's probably nowhere near as bad as this.

This is exactly where I'm at. Here's hoping that Wolfpack keeps going with theirs and does a better job on their research, and price point. Fred K.

Seems like Dream Models thinks a little too highly of their last two kits.

To be fair, as a Chinese company I don't know how much of the MSRP is their cut vs any distributors, plus potential tariffs/duties/etc that have trended radically upward the past four years (do the math...), and now add any additional expense to the entire supply chain owing to the pandemic.  Ironic as it may be, even in a communist country, Chinese companies have to make a profit.

I'd be very curious to know the retail price in Hong Kong or Shanghai, but whatever the reasons, the prices published thus far are well in excess of what IMHO is reasonable for the kit they've produced.

I don't think it's the importers. I bought several of their SA.365/Z-9/HH-65 kits. Got them via eBay from China. I didn't save much over what they would've cost locally. Two or three dollars at most. In one case I even got a kit from Hannants because once shipping was factored in, it was barely more expensive than eBay (and I could order some decals from Hannants as well). And that eBay shop had far and away the best prices for these kits.

The price in Malaysia for a special boxing of the Tiger including Malaysian decals  is to be 125 Malaysian Ringit. That's 30 USD. Still way to much for a kit of this size and detail.

Regarding size and detail, take something like Special Hobby's Vampire or Mirage F.1 kits for comparison. Here in Germany, these kits retail for about a third of what the Dream Model Tiger is to cost. I hope this isn't too apple-and-orange-y, talking about new tools from a manufacturer that isn't Airfix/Trumpeter/Revell league as far as sales go.

Thinking about it, it would've been wonderful had Special Hobby taken on the Tiger family.

Interesting as both 5399 and 5400 are F-5F twoseaters....

Given the way they've engineered the forward fuselage I have to assume a two-seater will follow. If they were only swapping parts for the RF-5E, they could've made the joint in the nose (the way Airfix did).

That Malaysian price seems strangely low compared to what's been reported for Japan and Europe.  $30 USD still seems high, but it's at least closer to the right order of magnitude for a kit this size and complexity.

I'm not sure if Dreammodel is officially a "limited run" injection outfit, which would impact their tooling & production costs compared to Special Hobby, et al.  Does the Dauphin kit have location pegs & holes in the part halves?

Let's be real, this kit is priced above their J-20 that is a vastly superior kit both in size and detail quality.

Judging by the cost of their AH-1Z, I'd say their management is trying to maximize income before the Wolfpack rebox shows up in stores.

Not sure what you mean by "rebox."  I believe it's been confirmed that the F-5 announced by Wolfpack has no relationship to Dreammodel's kit, it is another new tooling.
