Night Owl Models Posted August 28, 2020 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Tamiya 1/48 scale A-1J SkyRaider with upgrade kits for the cockpit, wheel wells, folding wings, wheels, gun barrels as well as after market decals and paint mask. Model was marked for the 518th Fighter Squadron On 18 March 1964 the newly formed 518th Fighter Squadron trained by U.S. Navy pilots began operations from Bien Hoa AB Vietnam in support of the U.S. led war. CONSTRUCTION After market detail kits Federal Standard colours modification of the cockpit for the interior detail set Installation of the new wheel wells Cutting away original wing to accept the new folding wing set New folding wing left and old cut off wing right Adding the folding wing mechanism and brass gun barrels Initial fit and alignment of the folding wing Moving on to paint test swatch for the pre shading with mottled effect Pre shading panel lines in Nato black with mottled effect then over spray with USAF Light Gray Starting with the paint mask application First folding wings were painted with mask and here is the final finish after mask is removed. Remainder of plane was masked and painted All masking removed and ready for a coat of Vallejo Satin varnish. Lastly decals then weathering with Vallejo pigments, washes and weathering pencils. Oil steaks were done with engine oil stain line then everything was sealed with a second coat of satin varnish. Forgo the decals and hand paint the catwalks.
