A-1J Vietnamese SPADS 518th Fighter Squadron 1/48

Tamiya 1/48 scale A-1J SkyRaider with upgrade kits for the cockpit, wheel wells, folding wings, wheels, gun barrels as well as after market decals and paint mask.

 

Model was marked for the 518th Fighter Squadron On 18 March 1964 the newly formed 518th Fighter Squadron trained by U.S. Navy pilots began operations from Bien Hoa AB Vietnam in support of the U.S. led war.

Moving on to paint test swatch for the pre shading with mottled effect

Starting with the paint mask application

First folding wings were painted with mask and here is the final finish after mask is removed.

Remainder of plane was masked and painted

All masking removed and ready for a coat of Vallejo Satin varnish.

Lastly decals then weathering with Vallejo pigments, washes and weathering pencils. Oil steaks were done with engine oil stain line then everything was sealed with a second coat of satin varnish.

Forgo the decals and hand paint the catwalks.

Wonderful paint and weathering.  I think the A-1 is hard to get right because it is so dirty with exhaust and oil.  In my opinion, you have hit it out of the ball park.  Home run!!  Great job.

Lovely work! :thumbsup: Quite a colourful scheme for a Skyraider, what with the the VNAF roundels and the checker pattern on the fuselage.

 

The folded wings look pretty cool, contrasting with the camo scheme.
