How's everyone else doing now that the NFL season is upon us?   I've been a hard core football fan for ages but this year, I hate to admit it but I'm just not into it.   Nothing to do with the sorry state of the Patriots or the politics going on right now, I just don't have much interest.   I watched 10 min of the KC game and then went off and surfed the net.

Not sure why but I think I'm all set with football.  On the plus side, I'll actually be spending time outside with my family on Sundays instead of knocking back beers and snacks watching football from 1PM on.

I used to be a fan, Redskins 😬.  But I started watching the tour de france and other bike races.  I will tell you those guys on bikes make football players look like fat wimps.  They run a play and go over to the sidelines and take oxygen for 10 minutes.  The guys on bikes race 21 day at over 100miles/day up mountains where the oxygen is thin and never stop.  Real athletes.  Just  my opinion.  Football is too political now anyway.  I watched the kc game and everybody had some statement to make.  30 minutes of politics and apologies and staying in locker rooms and kneeling, etc.  I can watch msnbc if I want that stuff.  Probably too much here.  I'll quit now and go hide.

Long-time football fan here - listened to games on AFN Radio in the early 1980's before Channel 4 started showing highlights and then live games here in the UK; went to Wembley Stadium in '87 for the LA Rams v Denver game, had to pick a team, and chose the Broncos, primarily because of Colorado being home to the AF Academy...

....and followed them ever since. Wore a Broncos T-shirt behind the RAF Mildenhall O'Club bar as I went through the embarrasment of seeing them lose Superbowl XXIV, and watched their games (and others) on AFN for some five years, either on base or at someone's house...

....had to go back to just one game a week on UK terrestial TV after leaving Mildenhall - not following any other sport meant a subscription for Sky's sport channels on satellite wasn't worth the money. Then I acquired an AFN decoder which was still active under it's previous owner's details, meaning I had six Sunday evening games to choose from each week, plus Sunday and Monday Night Football which I'd record on re-rewritable DVDs - when that activation suddenly ended after six months, one of my ex-Mildenhall buddies then at an Embassy soon had me up and running again for another three-and-a-half years, including the back-to-back Superbowl wins...

....then it was back to a game a week on UK terrestial TV again for a few years, since followed by online full game replays - and now, with live streaming online, I can watch any game I choose on Sunday evenings, and full replays the next day of the Sunday, Monday and Thursday night games (played at stupid 'oclock this side of the pond)...

....the beginning of the Chiefs v Texans game was what it was, but watching an online replay meant I could fast-forward through it - but the NFL's back, and I'm ready for some football!

Raider fan, curious to see which Derek Carr shows up this season-the "by any means" QB that ended the playoff drought in 2016 or the dump-it-off-so-I-don't-get-hit player he's been ever since. Also interested in seeing the new Death Star in action but it won't be the same without fans in it.

I feel the same way about soccer (known as football everywhere outside the US). Those guys run and run and run and run. From one end of the field to the other. Over and over again. I'm amazed at their stamina. I get winded just watching.

In any case, used to be a Packers fan and watched every Sunday. When I moved back to Wisconsin, with my old girlfriend from high school who doesn't watch ANY sports, I just lost interest. Instead I park myself in front of the TV and try to find some mindlessly fun entertainment. SciFi is my preference. We have enough streaming services that I can usually find something that I've only watched 20 or 30 times.

I was a big Cowboys fan back in the Landry / Meredith / Lily days. (yeah I'm old)

After Landry's decline and the rise(?) of Jerry Jones, not so much.  Actually not at all.

Common themes:

Why are the Cowboys expanding their already new stadium?  Jerry's head won't fit in the current one.

They had to get rid of the offense coach so they could hire two more parole officers.

I watched the Super Bowl this year, but lost my appetite. Didn't burn my jerseys or anything like that. just became completely unappetizing. and I was a Sunday Ticket, level fanatic. Done with it. The Flags and hit rules became ridiculous and then the kneeling (Villanueva the Ranger being the only Steeler to show up for the antherm was my "good bye" moment)  and finally the latest happenings insured I'm done. I'm sure the NFL is more than happy to have anything that distracts from that pesky brain trauma and general criminal mischief of its players, like knocking women out on elevators, murder, rape, etc.

its just generally sad because sports were where you went to get away from all the politics and just come together and enjoy things, but no one is allowed to enjoy things anymore. so that's nice.

Agreed

Back 30+ years ago when Sports Illustrated named Greg Lemond Sportsman of the Year your typical Joe Six Pack sports fan was all up in arms about it.  The common complaint was “he’s no athlete, all he did was ride his bike for 21 days”.  Those complainers didn’t understand the stamina required to complete the Tour let alone the strategy require to win.

The top NFL players are for the most part a bunch of overpaid cry babies.

I hope Marino and the KillerBees can pull it out this season.  I need a new pair of Isotoners come to think of it.  I'll watch the foozball Superbowl game for sure.

How 'bout NASCAR?>

I just bought a 1/24 kit of the Ford Mark Martin #6 Valvoline Roush Stroh's Viagra rocket.

What Greg LeMond did to beat Laurent Fingon in the final time trail in the 1989 Tour de France was unbelievable to make up 50 seconds  and beat him by 8, Fingon should have cut off his pony tail.

Watching to break up the monotony, although the Steelers should have a decent year.  Plus, getting to watch Cleveland flounder is always entertaining in and of itself.

As far as comparing athleticism across sports, they are all different.  Different energy systems, different demands for different skills, etc.

How about Tadej Pogacar beating Primoz Roglic by 59 seconds after being behind 57 seconds coming into the Time Trial, UPHILL.

That time trial was one for the ages!!! The entire Tour was great! Some of those climbs were epic! I can't imagine a 25% gradient. Kudos to anyone who can get a bike up that.

Another thing I found interesting was that Phil Liggett was in London and Bob Roll was somewhere in the states and it was like they were sitting next to one another. No breaks in the conversations. I do miss Paul Sherwin though. One of the best.

And spectacular architecture that goes back centuries.

Never been a big fan of football, but the wife is.  I'm the football widow in the family.  But the NFL has finally jumped the shark with the pandering to the players and not to the fans.  And now with the canned crowd noise too, the ratings drop is real and for a reason.   I can tolerate college ball, but there is starting to be a very fine line between college and pro lately.  Starting to get turned off to it as well.

As far as NASCAR, I gave up when they stopped using production car bodies/panels.  '91 was the end of an era for me.  Especially when they did away with Winston Cup.

I used to enjoy it, but over the past couple of years, it's just been fading from the fabric of my life.  I'm getting more things done around the house and I'm spending more time with my family.  Kind of to my surprise, I find myself not even missing it a single bit.  In fact, even living here in the shadow of Lambeau Field, I went about my day last Sunday and completely forgot that there was any football being played that day.  Someone asked me if I had watched the game and all I could say was "Huh?"

I've really lost the taste for football lately especially since the leauge and players informed me that I'm a racist hater.  I never even realized it until they told me.

I never have been much of a football fan.  I am more in line with Geoff, those Tour de France cyclists are definitely fit!  I have been happily married for over 30 years and haven't owned a TV the whole time and only got internet last week, no joke.  My music teacher daughter needs it to do lessons over Zoom (whatever that is!).  I figure I pay the city or other refuse service $$ a month to haul away my garbage, so why should I pay a cable company $$$ to pump it back into my living room?  Just saying.  Anyway, I read a lot of good history books to the kids while they were growing up and still do.  Plus I spend a lot of time walking outdoors & holding hands with the missus.  Hence, sometimes I don't get much modeling done, but I can live with that.  So let the season begin and may the best (worst?) team win.  Then lather, rinse, & repeat next year!  Your results may vary.

This too. I'm done.  Gone. Sayonara.

NFL doesn't want me, and I don't want them either.  See ya.

Haven't missed a single Steelers game since the 2009 season and plan on watching every game this season. You also have to respect an organization that backs its players when they decide to do their own thing with regard to the current situation.

Not sure I'll ever "respect" the NFL for any reason (deflategate, concussions, domestic abuse by players being ignored, etc).  That being said IMO, the decision to allow the players to "do their own thing" comes down to the fact that they were going to take a knee regardless of what the league did or didn't do.  To try to formally discipline the offending players would have created a PR shat storm.   The part that bothers me is that pro sports response has been too far over the top.   I may be one of the few folks on this site who tend to agree with the principles that the players are protesting about.  That being said, it's pretty sad when management (not just the NFL, the NBA is way over the top on this) dictates that this is the only cause that is worthy of protesting for.    Tell that to this guy:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/steelers-alejandro-villanueva-covers-name-of-police-shooting-victim-on-helmet-with-name-of-military-veteran/ar-BB194LiU?ocid=uxbndlbing

He got lit up pretty badly on social media for honoring a fellow soldier who burned to death while pulling fellow troops out of a Bradley that took an IED hit in Iraq.

It's the same in the NBA, anyone recall what happened when a few players decided to protest China's human rights record?  That got snuffed pretty damned fast.   Apparently all injustices are important, just some are more important that others.

It's apparent you don't follow the Steelers, or know what I'm referring to.

First, not a single player on the Steelers has taken a knee during the National Anthem this season (Yes, I know it's only two games in). Second, prior to the first game, the team decided to put the name of Antwon Rose on their helmets. During the game, Alejandro Villanueva taped over it and wrote the name Alwyn Cashe on his. As noted, you provided a link to this in your post. After doing more research and learning Rose had been involved in a drive by shooting prior to being killed, Maurkice Pouncey decided to put the name 'Eric Kelly' on his helmet for the second game. Eric Kelly was a Police Officer killed in the line of duty.

It isn't a matter the Steelers organization 'allowed' them to do it, it is a matter the organization supported them after they did it. The Steelers also made it clear they would support any player that chose to do anything similar.

I'm pretty sure none of them care what people on 'social media' think either.
