Anders_Isaksson
I am having trouble to pin down the paint scheme on this airframe. In the below illustration it has winter camouflage but the ICM 32nd scale kit says it is finished in aluminium overall. Any ideas on what is correct? seawinder
You might take a look at this page at Massimo Tessitori's site: http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/i16/i16painting/I16painting-short.htm Almost at the bottom of the page there's a picture of an I-16 apparently painted in Aluminum. The caption reads: "Some Soviet planes seem painted with an aluminum winter camouflage, instead of white. Someone suggested that this could be an effect of froze and low sun, but some images are very convincing, particularly if they include other planes that don't appear painted aluminum under the same conditions (as the famous MiG-3 n.12 of 12GvIAP). It is reported that a Soviet directive of the time forbidden to use aluminum paint as a winter camouflage, but this could confirm that someone was just doing this." Anders_Isaksson
Thanks, great info! Looks like either version (white or aluminium) is just as likely. Some pondering need to be done...
Mfezi
I tried to post a link to a very clear picture of Tsokolaev's aircraft (the one that the profile belongs to), but the forum software wouldn't let me post it since it is not a https file. From the picture, this particular aircraft really looks like winter white rather than silver to me.
Mfezi
Try this link, and scroll down to the picture that is captioned "Комэск гвардии старший лейтенант Г.Д. Цоколаев в кабине своего истребителя И-16 борт 21.": http://ava.org.ru/iap/4gm.htm As I said, the forum won't let me direct-link to the picture. One must judge for oneself, but it doesn't look like silver to me. Edit: That same picture here and another picture that appears to be of the same aircraft: http://soviet-aces-1936-53.ru/abc/ch/tsokolaev.htm Edited October 3, 2020 by Mfezi

Many thanks! 😀 Going from the photos and how the airframe surface varies in hues I am certainly leaning towards winter camouflage for "21". Thanks again!
Mfezi
Glad I could help. Of course, when you work off black and white photographs, it is always difficult to be sure about colour. It looks like white to me, but I also cannot be 100% certain. If it was my model, I probably would have finished it in white unless some other, more convincing evidence popped up. From the pictures, It looks like some weathering would be in order though.
Anders_Isaksson
Yes indeed. Weathered it will be. 🙂
