Multi layers of oil paint weathering question

Recommended Posts

Got back into modeling recently after a 20 year break. Mostly building modern fighter jets in 1/32 scale. I’ve enjoyed learning to use an airbrush and practicing all kinds of weathering techniques. I’m about to start weathering a USN F/A-18. I had some success weathering along panel lines with slight hints of burnt umber and mineral spirits on the F-4 I just completed. My question is: If I do that on this F-18 and wait for it to fully dry, can I then come back and do some more oil stippling and color filtering on different panels without affecting the first dried layer? Or will the mineral spirits loosen the first layer. I’d hate to have to spray a light flat varnish between each dry layer of oil weathering. Once it cures, does it stay that way or not?
