Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Question, would the tailhooks of the A-7's in Desert Storm (specifically VA-72) have been striped (meaning 2 shades of gray) or simply left in one shade of gray? I DON'T mean the CO's aircraft, in case it makes a difference.
GreyGhost
Best I've found so far Andrew... HtH ... -Gregg
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Thanks Gregg! Actually still tough to tell....are those stripes I see, or just wear & tear?
GreyGhost
Yeah, I'm not sure either... I found that photo on Pinterest ... -Gregg
Finn
This video at the 3:36min mark has SLUFs landing after a mission: the start of the video has good views of A-7E loads. Jari

Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Fantastic stuff, thanks Jari! Tough to tell for sure, but I'm thinking no stripes. Maybe if I really grime it up even more it will be as hard for a viewer to tell on my build as it has been for me looking at the real ones.... Finn
Here are a couple of Hi-viz VA-72 A-7Es, the one on the right looks to have a striped hook: Jari
kurnass77
No stripes my friend Edited November 19, 2020 by kurnass77
Collin
Tailhooks came in one color by that late stage in their life...dirty. Don't know the exact FS # of that sorry. Love that 3 x HARM loadout. Cheers Collin
GW8345
For low-vis A-7's, the hook "stinger" was a solid grey, same color grey as the aircraft.
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Yep, I'm finally seeing that now.... What I had been wondering before was if they sometimes did striping in two shades of gray, like they did on some lo-vis Tomcats, Hornets and others. I'm glad to know there's a clear-cut ruling on it! The only time I saw striping on the stingers was when the birds were in hi-vis paint, all the low-vis birds had solid colors.
Glynn Jacobs
Man, Those DS A-7s sure look COOL, in a grubby, lo-viz sort of way! Kinda makes me want to build my 72nd scale Fujimi kit as one of these birds instead of a Greek one, as planned! "Fly NAVY!" WARDOG

WARDOG Couldn't agree more; a DS Corsair has been on my bucket list for many years, and only 5 yrs ago I finally got a 1/72 Fujimi for that purpose. Finally started it this year. This thread was part of the final detailing. Very happy with the result.... Edited November 26, 2020 by Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
