Additional pylon on an F-15C

Recommended Posts

Random question and maybe I've missed something, but does the F-15C have an additional pylon on the wing to hold a EMC pod?  Oddly enough, I was looking at a Revell 1/48 F-15C build and it was there in the build, yet the instructions it has it in place of the missiles on a pylon.

Am I missing something or is this just a case of an old mold using outdated information.

It's been a long time since I've been around a F-15 or even built one.  However I have the same kit of Lt.Col. Wallace's aircraft.  He flew it as the Commander of the William Tell Shogun team when they deployed to Florida for the competition.  They flew ono-stop from Kadena to Florida and made it within 10 minutes of their estimated time.

I worked inteh scheduling section for the fighter wing and would see the team almost every day.

I have included a shot of the team the day they left for the states, one where they got back, and a couple when they were in flight .  I don't see any extra pylon under their wings.  They carrieed three tanks for the trip but if they had ECM pods with them they must have been carried in the new KC-10s they were provided.

I think that the extra pylon was added for the Isreali A.F. and maybe J.A.S.D.F. when their ships arrived.

Other than seeing them in the old Revell kit, I’ve never seen an operational F-15C with the extra outboard pylon, empty or carrying anything.  I believe the capability may be there, but they’ve never been actually used so far.

They were photographed at least once for a proposed SEAD version.

I think there has been talk of installing the pylons for future upgraded versions.

The outer wing pylons are not used on earlier F-15s. There were fluttering issues caused by then during testing. You will however see them on F-15SA and newer aircraft because the use a new fly by wire system not used on earlier F-15s.

Of note, the outer pylons on the F-15SA/QA/EX are differently shaped that the ones tested on early F-15s.

The old style had a vertical trailing edge on the pylon, while the new style slopes back at a relatively shallow angle.

Cheers,

Hoops

It had a lot to do with the old analog flight control tapes and departure susceptibility at high angles of attack with stuff hanging out there. F-15SA/QA/EX has a totally new digital fly-by-wire flight control system that greatly alleviates this danger.   So bring on stations 1/9!
