CH-147F - What's in the 'hole'?

Recommended Posts

Courtesy of @Dutch, a set of Belcher Bits Canadian Helos decals will soon be winging its way across the pond to me - inspiring me to crack on with producing a two-tone green CH-147F from one of my Revell MH-47E kits...

....as much of the stencilling appears to be unique to the Canadian birds, I'm making my own decals for it, including replacements for the various kit sheet grilles - whilst working on these, I noticed that the rear rotor pylon has a single-width one, rather than 'paired' set as supplied and seen on other Chinook variants; even more prominent is that rather than having a dark interior, it is actually bright zinc chromate yellow, as seen in the (enlargeable) photo below:

I could simply paint the appropriate area ZCY and apply the grille decal, but it might look odd without any depth to it. The alternative is to open it up and fashion an interior - that's if anyone has any photos showing what's in this 'hole'?

The rear transmission and rotor shaft.

Thanks, but I've found a few photos with those front 'clamshell' doors open showing that forward area - the bit I'm interested in is behind it.

A couple of cutaway drawings supposedly both of a D model have differing arrangements - one appears to have a pair of radiators on a 'deck':

Whilst another doesn't:

Going back to RAF parlance the upper cutaway that you have is a HC1 whilst the lower one is a HC2 (note metal blades on the upper one). The fan on the deck if I remember properly (I did not work on HC1s for that long) is the fan for the Aft Xmsn. I will be honest and say that I cannot remember what those radiators things were for.

I am just wondering if the slot in the F version is a better way of relieving the air pressure around the Comb Xmsn and on the hinges and locking mechanism of the doors themselves.

There’s nothing in there. It’s a hold over from the A through C’s which had the AFT transmission oil coolers mounted flat to the deck.
They changed the layout of the screens and the method of access from earlier models but as far as the D and F models, it’s empty.

Thanks, guys, that makes it easy - means I could simply open it up and box it off....

....and love the 'ramp-surfing' pic, Hooker! 👍
