CD48173 - 1/48 FJ-3/3M Fury

Recommended Posts

Pulled this off an eBay listing.  Hope it’s accurate.  I ordered some kits from Lucky Model (they haven’t posted photos yet) and I’ll posted updated photos when my kits arrive.

I always intended to include a few of the blue jets regardless of whether the slats are in there or not.

Great! Maybe robbing the slats from a Pro Modeler F-86D is an option. It will be far cheaper than buying a KH -2 just for the wings.

My KH kit arrived today. The schemes are spectacular. However, given some of KH's history with the accuracy of markings, I would love each and every one of them to be redone by Caracal. I've no idea which I intend to do, although if I had to plump for a favourite it would be the VF-21 GSB FJ-3 with the yellow tail and huge 'I' marking.

Well, does it include slatted wings or not?

A question for those who have gotten their FJ-3 kits.  Does the kit have the deep fuselage for the 3 or is it the same as the -2 with just a few scoops and detail parts?

The kit has a new Sprue A that includes a new forward fuselage, deeper intake trunk and intake lip, new wings and other -3 parts

I'm pretty sure the lightning bolt and other trim items on that VF-154 bird (H 408) should be white-bordered orange, not red. Just an educated guess as the 4xx series (nose numbers) was usually trimmed in either yellow or orange in the period when they changed from gloss sea blue to the gray/white scheme. Coincidently, the 2xx series went from white trim to yellow trim, and this also spanned the scheme changeover period. Black and white photos of this aircraft definitely show that the color was darker than yellow, and shows the white outlines. There are always exceptions, of course, and I await confirmation in the form of an actual color photo of this jet. So I say orange!😊

I test fitted the -2 slatted wings to the -3 model.  Fits ok, the only problem at are the ammo bay doors for the slatted wing don’t quite fit the FJ-3 fuselage.  The solution is probably to drop both bay doors, but I may try to modify my doors.

Correct.

Also found a shot of a -2 with the wing root leading edge folded down and NOT attached to the ammo door.  Look behind the pilot's right elbow.  Also can see the opposite side below the belly.  KH instructions are incorrect.

Both pics from my collection.

That’s a -3 (scoop on aft fuselage instead of a NACA inlet) with a fixed cambered leading edge. There was no need for that removable leading edge fairing on the -2 because a small fixed fairing on the ammo door sufficed (as it also did on the early -3’s with the slatted wing). Also see https://tailspintopics.blogspot.com/2011/04/fj23-fury-redux.html

But kit directions to locate this fairing on the ammo door when it is open are incorrect. Note that engraved lines for the hinge arms are present on the underside of the wing.

I used the correct color in my 1/72 scale decals (CD72083 has this aircraft) and will probably have to put it on one of the 1/48 sheets seeing how KH got it wrong..
