JPaunicka
Photos of my just completed (Minus display stand) Revell 1:144 model of Discovery on her maiden flight, STS-41D. Build time was approx 6-months, on and off. Display stand will be forth coming in the next couple weeks. Since Discovery is my favorite orbiter, I wanted to do a model of her with an interesting payload configuration. Turns out her maiden flight was quite the unique layout, especially with the OAST-1 solar array experiment. Custom detailed payload bay with OAST-1 Solar array deployed, and SBS-4 ready to deploy (model shown in a fictionalized payload bay state) After market parts included NewWare SSMEs, StarTracker inserts, and Plbd details. AXM models helped with scaling and details of SBS-4 and LEASAT models. My Silhouette 4 vinyl cutter helped out with the fabrication of the OAST payload frame. Solar array is custom built and decaled. The window framing is actually built up from some details and discussions I picked up from an older post on this forum. I realize how much of a historical PITA the orbiter windows are to deal with. Since I'm still relatively new to the hobby, I like to challenge myself. I used this technique on a recent AIRFIX stack build with really good results. I also realize there is always the safety net of using decals for the windows if things were to really go pear-shaped. But so far, good results of two of two models! Payload bay, and Fwd/& Aft bulkheads are lined in a fabric material I picked up from a local HobbyLobby. SBS payload sunshilelds actually started out covered in the same material, but when I saw how well the RMS came out after being covered in aluminum foil, I wound up changing the sun shields to being covered in Aluminum foil, as well. The decals are mainly all from the Revell kit itself. I might add this is a very detailed and quality decal set. I'm tempted to purchase another one of these kits for decals alone! Bottom tile decals (not shown) were provided by LakeCounty Spaceport. Happy to answer any additional questions. Edited February 13, 2021 by JPaunicka
crowe-t
Great job! The payload bay looks real nice. If you can show the bottom tiles it would be nice to see them. Edited February 13, 2021 by crowe-t
K2Pete
So nice to see an open Payload Bay and you've added some nice detail! Those Satellites look GREAT! And the OAST Payload frame is built from scratch, eh? Nicely done ... and yeah I read that you used the Silhouette for making a guide, but still, nice job! Be sure to post some final pix when you decide how to display this! Pete
mkjm
Both your Revell and Airfix kits are fantastic. Excellent work! What material did you use to give the Canadarm that texture?

What material did you use to give the Canadarm that texture? Thanks for the compliment! The CanadaArm/RMS is actually wrapped in aluminum foil. I had read, perhaps on this forum, that aluminum foil does a good job of replicating the creases in the thermal blanket. Sure enough, it does look pretty good at that scale. I used some other fabric for the payload bay liner and initially on the satellite sunshades. In the end, I wound up using aluminum foil on the sunshields, as well. I was hesitant to use it at first, mainly in part to wondering how well paint would adhear to it. To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure and not convinced that it wouldn't flake aware if substantially disturbed. It held up pretty well during final assembly, but I'm making sure to not overly disturb it in the future.
