HobbyBoss MV-22 Osprey in-box review

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Not sure how to insert pics so bear with me. If it doesn't work first time  I'll fix it
After uncountable requests we finally have a new-tool V-22 Osprey! Hobby Boss has released a brand new MV-22 Osprey with a large compliment of current operational equipment. Its kit #81769 and available at your local shop soon or you can order direct from MRC, the US distributor. I'm happy to give you a quick "in-box" review here but I've not fit anything so I won't comment on accuracy- just it's features both good and bad IMHO.

Right off I was struck by the size of the box. Its big and completely full with a nice box art of the MV-22.

Here's a pic of the fuselage sprue with the rear ramp parts. You've probably noticed already that the side cabin door is molded closed. There are no alternate door parts or "cut" lines inside. (Aftermarket producers please put me first on the list for new doors). Some of the Osprey is composite material so happily the panel lines and rivets are present where appropriate.

The cabin interior halves insert into the fuselage and have the main structure and some electronic boxes. In the real MV-22 this entire area is covered with wiring and pipes so you super-detailers will have a field day. All the passenger seats are individual parts to attach to the interior walls. Unfortunately the seat back and seat bottom is cast as one part- folded up making it impossible to pose them deployed.  This sprue also contains the engine halves and flaps. The flaps are made to attach to the wing in the up position and there's no provision for posing them down however it looks easy to modify the supports to show them down.

Here's the main wing and engine intakes. All the many vortex generators are represented and the entire wing can be rotated. Likewise the engine nacelles can be posed in any position.

The tail surface parts. Now's a good time point out the extremely fine panel line and rivet detail on this kit. No "Mad Engraver" worked this kit... but... the engraving is so fine that I expect much of it will dis-appear under the paint.  The control surface gaps are represented by the exact same fine scribing . They're hard to see even without paint. I plan to make these more pronounced by rescribing.

Next is a double sprue with the straight main blades and rotor hubs. HobbyBoss has provided a set of folded blades on another sprue allowing the modeler to pose the model in its flight or storage configuration with the wing rotated over the fuselage. Nice.

Almost all of the miscellaneous parts are on one sprue. These include the side sponsons, cockpit parts, landing gear and cabin deck. The cockpit and overhead switch console have nicely scaled  raised details. The instructions show the cockpit door assembled closed but it would be easy to pose it open against the bulkhead wall. Even windscreen wipers are included.

Decals are provided for one unit only. They're in register and appear nicely thin. One small photo etch fret is provided which contains the pilot seat belts and some fuselage grilles. The clear parts are very cleanly molded and crystal clear. They're also well padded in the box.

Many thanks to MRC for providing the review sample.

I received my two kits yesterday and it's clear HB had their "A" team on it.

A couple things to add. First, the vertical tails are very close in shape to those found in the Italeri kit. If you have decals from XtraDecal, Caracal or my line FLD, our existing sheets should fit with little to no modification.

Second, I've already released a canopy/wheel mask for it and currently have correct pitot tubes, as well as an open crew entry door in work.

Dave,

you might well know the answer to this question. The Naval version is a little different from the Airforce version so they told us at work. Is this kit a Navy or Airforce version?  Or does it come with all the parts to build either version?

Well, it's technically a Marine Corps MV-22B. Both the USN CMV-22B and USAF CV-22B variants differ from it. The only part included that is specific to the either is the nose mounted antenna found on the CV-22. Unfortunately, they have you install the part in step 17 and make no mention that it shouldn't be on this version.

Other than that nose antenna, there are no other parts in the kit that would allow you to correctly build a CMV or CV.

Any chance of upgrades to the engine air intake that’s molded solid in the kit, or detail for the side of the engine pods and end of the wing that are visible when the engines are vertical?  Thanks.

Will definitely add those to the list of things I'm looking at doing.
