Covering paint over painted chromed factory parts

Recommended Posts

hello

Wether applying primer or not to the factory chromed object the paint i apply above peels off if i apply Tamiya tape on top to isolate a painted section  . how do you go about this ?

I would lightly sand the area to roughen up the chrome where paint is to be applied (mask off the surrounding areas to avoid marring them).  This would give the primer a better bite.  Then use a good lacquer primer like Mr. Surfacer, Tamiya, MRP, etc...   Let the primer fully dry and spray your color of choice.  If you do this, the chance of Tamiya tape peeling off paint is very low.

hello , i use mr surfacer but i did not sand the chromed surface , How long should i wait post sanding and priming before painting again over that area ? once painted over is 1 hr enough time before masking over the painted area ?

yes it does but you have to soak and leave it for a while then scrub etc wash and all that . Brake fluid is excellent no damage at all to styrene . while on the subject does masking liquid also cause peeling ? Today i tried plastecine sausages but it peeled all the same. The kit i am building is the Trumpeter 1/12 Ford Gt 40 and almost half the sprues are chromed which is a nuissance even with airbrush .

As fine a grade of wet and dry paper as you can find and activate the surface with it. You wouldnt have a problem then.
You dont need to remove completely as long as the surface is activated.

Paint might stick to it in the short to medium and maybe even long term but if its not activated then its not keyed to anything and could easily be removed.

the kit has an enormous number of very small parts more than 6 big chrome sprues that have to be painted , its really almost impossible to sand some small parts such as valves for cables and they are all chromed . They look great with clear colors  when intended but using dry brush on some of the small parts creates a mess . thanks advice and will apply soon .

How about giving Deluxe Materials Strip Magic a try?

You can brush it on the areas you want to strip the chrome off and wait only around five minutes.
