basecoat for chrome silver

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what kind of basecoat do you guys use before airbrushing chrome or chrome silver. I tested with Gunze Black surfacer 1500 as base coat and MRP Chrome on top of it, the end result is almost like a matt aluminium, not as reflective and shining as I expected. Probably because the black surfacer 1500 is not glossy enough ?

Can't speak to the paints you are using, but when I shoot Alclad II Chrome or Polished Aluminum, etc. it's over a very glossy coat of black enamel.  EVERY defect will show, as will orange peel, dust, improperly sanded parts, etc.  The model should be as close to polished as you can get it BEFORE adding ANY paint.  Also, the chrome usually has to be put on in very thin coats (you can always add more later!), because, like a mirror, the chrome reflects off of the black for that super look..

Mr. Surfacer 1500 black is a primer not meant to be used as a base coat for chrome.  You want to try either Alclad II gloss black base or Mr. Color GX-2 gloss black.

Maybe a bit late with the reply, but MRP actually recommends that you use their 2K lacquer before applying the chrome.
