ChesshireCat
looking at the Squadron booklet on the B17 bomber last night, and towards the back of the book were several photos of the B17H. Found it most interesting. It appears that they were built off of modded later B17G's to my eyes and the serial numbers were all mid to late 1944 airframes. Now the question is if the Airfix kit is the right airframe? Also did anybody do a conversion kit? Looks like they removed the chin turret and faring and replaced them with a simple radar dome. The boat was a 21 foot Higgins boat, and that may become an issue. Any thoughts? gary
mungo1974
Wartime ASR B-17H were a mix of new build B-17G modified at depot level and war weary G's that were converted in the field using kits. Paragon Designs did a conversion set in 1/72 & 1/48 but they are OOP,another company called i think 299 models did a set 30 odd years ago and Academy did a SB-17G boxing of its 1/72 kit although its quite difficult to find now. War Weary ex-457th BG "The Duchess" in service with the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron (ERS) Boxted Suffolk, still fully armed minus ball turret The "Donna J III" 5 ERS Boxted with unusual radome fairing. 2nd ERS B-17H in the Pacific with the later standard fitted nose radar. And finally a pic of future NASCAR legend Smokey Yunick in front of the 1st ERS B-17H he flew. Edited May 11, 2021 by mungo1974
