Got to see a rare treat today

Recommended Posts

So, sitting in my vehicle before clocking in to work, I see an all white C-32B doing touch and goes at Montgomery Regional Airport/ Dannelly Field. Not sure why they are doing touch and goes in Alabama, but a nice treat indeed! I occasionally see Birmingham's KC-135's as well. It's nice to be able to work at a place right at the end of the runway.

That's cool!

Back in the mid to late 80s, I worked at the US distributor of Gucci watches, they were located about a quarter of a mile from the perimeter fence of MCAS El Toro.

I'd watch Hornets, Intruders, Phantoms, Skyhawks and Prowlers all the time!

Enjoy the distractions! :thumbsup::coolio:

Bring back the late 80s/90s, man i miss it so much, super great era for military jet aviation, so much variety!

We're under the approach for Newquay airport (what was RAF St Mawgan) when runway 30 is in use - the G7 summit at Carbis Bay is coming up in a few weeks time, so there's a 50/50 chance of seeing various VIP birds overhead...

Heard a sudden howl of engines directly overhead earlier today, and looked out of the rear window just in time to see this puppy disappearing off towards Newquay, just beneath the overcast:

....being only partly visible in the murk, I didn't realise what it was until I opened ADS-B Exchange and saw its identity!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had an early arrival for the G7 summit pass overhead on approach to Newquay - Reach180, a C-17 that flew into Germany last weekend...

....presumably it's bringing in the 'advance party' - Secret Service, etc - to prepare for POTUS's arrival next week...

....I didn't see it, but apparently Japan's 'Air Force 1' was seen flying around the Newquay area a few days ago...

Following on from the above, after half-a-dozen or so further C-17s going into Newquay over the weekend, all of which routed via Germany, this morning (Mon) has just seen another pass overhead on approach, but this time direct from Joint Base Andrews...

After a succession of grey USAF C-17s over the past few days, this pretty little bird just went over a few minutes ago:

Two hours on from the above, and three MV-22s and two VH-3Ds all landed on the golf course of a large hotel on the clifftop just over a mile from us, sat rotors running for a few minutes, and then all departed in the direction of Newquay...

....totally unexpected!

So, in the past few days, the following aircraft carrying G7 leaders and guests have all passed directly or almost directly overhead at around 2,000ft:

C-32 09-0016
VC-25A 82-8000
A321neo G-XATW
A310 15001
B777 80-1111

Falcon F7x F-RAFA

A319 MM62174

A319 15+01

B737 A36-001

B737 Z-SRSA

B744 HL7465

.....and thanks to an unseasonably low cloudbase, I haven't actually seen a single one of them! ☹️

Apart from the Falcon and HMX-1 aircraft mentioned in the preceding post, the only others I've seen were a Wildcat orbiting the area a couple of days ago, and the police P.68R which has escorted the various convoys travelling to the nearby Eden Project, where the leaders have gathered for dinner as I type...

....what we have seen, though, have been half-a-dozen of those convoys which have driven right past our front door - including HM The Queen, and POTUS...

....just told our guests we should have charged them extra for the 'entertainment'!

Well the summit ended at lunchtime on a beautiful clear, sunny day, with almost unlimited visibility - departures started quite soon afterwards, and were spread out across the afternoon on into mid-evening...

....amazingly enough, the afternoon flights took off in this direction, and so passed virtually overhead - though climbing through the 10,000ft mark, rather than descending through 2,000ft. Despite the evening ones taking off in the opposite direction, they all turned and routed back this way, and so passed still easily within sight...

....none were worth trying to photograph, unfortunately - but at least I saw most of them! From the list above, I only missed out on the Italian A319, SA 737, and RAAF 737 - and had the added bonuses of an inbound French CN235, the second JF B.777, and a couple of C-17s, whilst outbound was A330 A39-007 (instead of the 737)...

....so after blowing out on all the arrivals, over seven hours I witnessed most of the 'rare treats' departures!

I know I'm digging up an old topic. But I had to share this. Looking at the flight trader app, I see an E-6 Mercury flying a race track pattern around Montgomery. Pretty cool to see it on the app, and then to look at the actual plane as it flies around. Not sure what it is doing, but pretty interesting to look at.
