Flat colored PE is so 2010.  Quinta 3D decals are the way to go in 2021 and beyond.

I am COMPLETELY SOLD!!! I have always wished Eduard would do 3D like this. How can I order? I need the set ASAP !!! Dai

Actually, Eduard has started doing similar types of sets.  They call them SPACE, but from what I’ve seen, they aren’t as detailed or thick (less 3D) as the Quinta sets.

I saw and no where close to QS products. Dai

Afternoon, folks.  I know its been a while, and I've seen some other recently-completed examples of this fine kit!  I had two other projects that were further along in the 'to finish' pile and wanted to get them done and out of the way.  So now I can resume work on this one.  I will post some new pics soon.

Test-fitting the weapons pylons.  I decided to leave off the drop tanks and fit Eduard BRASSIN TERs to each hardpoint.  The inboard pylons will hold  Mk.77 firebombs.  The outboard pylons will hold Mk.82 slicks.  They fit quite well.  Also dropped the AIM-7 Sparrows into their wells.

Main construction is finished.  I've started priming the various parts and the airframe.  I should start the main painting in a few days.  I also decided to leave off the belly tank and will be fitting a Mk.4 HIPEG gun pod from the Hasegawa Weapons Set C.

Laid down the top coat of Light Gull Gray, spraying Hataka lacquers.  I really like these paints, they go down really smooth.  First, I pre-shaded the panel lines, using grays and browns in random patterns to make it not so symmetric and uniform.    After airbrushing the LGG, I lightened it with a few drops of RAF Anti-Flash White, lightening some panels at random all over the topsides and fuselage.  I the lightened that mix further, concentrating on the tops of the wings and fuselage to simulate sun fading.  So far. so good.

Don't mind the cat in the background snoozing on the sofa, lol.

Some more work done.  The undersides have been airbrushed, first with Insignia White and then a light overspray/mottling done with RAF Anti-Flash White  (both colors are Hataka lacquers).  Their Insignia White has a brownish-yellow tint to it , making it look more like an ivory color than white.  I didn't care for it, but it made a  good off-white shade for the intakes.   The wheel-wells and speed brake wells were masked off and airbrushed with the RAF Anti-Flash White as well, and the nosecone was also masked off and airbrushed.  So were the flaps and rudder.

I found out that the intake splitter plates should be all in Light Gull Gray, but I like the demarcation line, so I'll call it 'artistic license'.  My model, my call 🙂

Not sure how this one ended up so small?

Next masking and airbrushing sessions will be the exhaust areas and the intake lips.

Enjoy!

Well underway on decals.  I'm using the Furball Aero-Design USMC Rhinos sheet and the AOA F-4B/J stencil sheet, and the subject is from VFMA-314 Black Knights.

I can't believe the sheer number of stencils these birds had.  I haven't even started the undersides yet.

After 7 days of airframe decals and stencils, I switched over to the pylons/bomb racks and ordnance to give myself a break.  Stencils a'plenty there too, but those are nearly done after a couple of evenings.   I still have the belly of the Phantom to do.  Egads.  And to think I have another B-model Phantom in the stash (Academy) with plans to do that as a Marine bird too.  I'll post some more pics soon.

Evening y'all.  Sorry its been so long since the lat update.  After 14 days of decals I had to set the bird aside to take a breather - but I didn't think that break would be nearly three months.  Sometimes life gets in the way, and I had another project to finish.  Anyways, here you go.  There's been a fair amount of progress - the decals were sealed, a gray sludge wash in the panel lines, and work using Oilbrushers  (Earth, Medium Gray, White, Starship Filth and Grime) to add some of the grit and dirt that made these Phantoms looks so weathered.  She's up on her mains and I've started loading some of the ordnance.  3 AIM-7s (the last one needs a bit of touch-up work first) and a Mk. 4 HIPEG gun pod from a Hasegawa Weapons Set.

Some more progress, all ordnance loaded and all landing gear components fitted.  Also added the IFR probe and exhaust nozzles (3-D printed ones from KA Models).  I think the closed nozzles give it a different look.   Just some minor work and the canopy, some extra grit and grime - especially around the exhausts -  and I hope to have this done soon.
