Both of these are out-of-the-box Eduard 1/48 Profipack kits...the first one, with white nose, wingtips and rudder is an E-3, and the White 20 is a G-6 late series.  The E-3 had been started long ago, but got set aside due to some minor fit issues, but it was time to finish it, which I did following the G-6 completion.  One thing I have learned, doing these WWII German aircraft, is that there is no substitute for creating the spinner spirals from masking and painting, instead of trying to go the decal route...which never seems to work out for me!

While I know I got a little 'artsy' with the photos this time...thoughts on these guys?

Honestly, I’m having a bit of a hard time with the photos Curt.   It might be easier to provide feedback with a few shots of both models entirely in focus.  From what I can see, the base camo looks good, but the mottles appear to be a bit rough on the G-6.  Perhaps the paint was drying a bit before it hit the model?  I’d like to see more pics 😊

Fair feedback, Steve, thanks.  Interesting comment on the mottling...must just be the angle or something, because the paint across the entire model is like glass.  I'll post some more 'normal' images shortly.  Thanks again.

As suggested by my friend Steve, here are some additional less 'artsy' images of my two 109s...

Curt,

I like these pictures much better and it is easier to see what is going on with the paint and weathering.  Yes, the paint finish looks much smoother!   The construction and paint work looks really good, so let’s talk weathering…

I really like the weathering on the exhausts and undersides where the tires kicked up dirt.  Something to consider to take it to the next level is using different dirt tones to build up the grime on the bottom to simulate old vs new dirt, wet (darker tones) vs dry (dustier tones) dirt accumulation and spreading out and randomizing the effect a bit more so it’s not just solely on axis with the wheels.  Think about the wheels continuing to spin as they are retracted- you will get some splatter effects all along the trailing edge behind the wheels.  I personally like randomly shading highly-thinned Tamiya Buff along the undersides aft of the wheel wells to simulate old grime and flicking various darker Ammo earth effects with a brush against a toothpick on the undersides to simulate newer/wetter dirt and grime.   You can also play with oils and pigments here to add some more variation.

Something else to consider is using some oils on top of the exhaust staining effects you have on the underside and refining/tapering the steaks a bit more.  Dark oil colors are great for simulating the “wet” look of a natural oil leak on the underside.  You can use mineral sprits to “trim” the streaks on the underside to get a nice point and then using a dry brush, blend out the tip so the fade in the streak naturally ends.

You are definitely improving on each subsequent model you post here, so take these critiques as encouragement to continue to up your game- you are ready to take your models to the next level!

Cheers!

Steve

Very impressive paintwork and nice choice of subjects.   Great work.

Thanks very much, bee!  It turns out that I had some remediation work to do on 'White 20' just last week.  I ended up knocking off on of the aileron balancing weights, and the photo etch antenna on the fuselage underside, plus noting that I hadn't done any weathering/dirt/dust on the main gear wheels and tires.  The weathering and the antenna were easy, but the balancing weight was a real challenge.  I have the Overtree kit for that model, but I really wanted to avoid raiding that kit for one tiny part.  I debated about how to scratch a replacement for that weight.  I ended up creating the tiny bomb shaped weight out of carefully rolled 'green stuff' epoxy, and made the 'strut' part out of Evergreen sheet plastic.  I didn't have any confidence that it would turn out well, but to my amazement, it did!
