TAMIYA F4B PHANTOM II 1/48.

Hello all...

The Eduard seat belts and Babibi 3D instruments panels are here. I must say I am very impressed with the quality of the Babibi offering. Raised details but not over whelming. Dai

Hello all,

Ready to get started this weekend. I found out I do not have the Tamiya XF-19 as called out for the cockpit gray. The Academy kit called for dark gull gray C317 that I I have. Is that color accurate that I can use instead? Dai

The wheel wells should be Insignia White but, any white will do I suppose since you'll probably be doing a wash inside the wells and dirtying them up. Most cockpits are FS 36231, Dark Gull Gray.

Both the Quinta and Babibi 3D sets have this light grey on the back ground that is much lighter then the dark gull grey. I am contemplating of custom match the paint so everything will match. Dai

Hello all,

Started working on the kit today. This is a massive kit. The cockpit itself is a kit on its own. I use both Quinta and Babibi 3D sets as Babibi gives you more panels than Q.  Both manufacturers have a grey back ground that is way too light so I painted it so it matches the rest. Dai

Hello all,

A little more progress today. I had to carefully paint between the dials to get the correct grey and any corrections can be made with a fine brush dipped in thinner going over the dials. I used both Quinta and Babibi for the panels. If you want the ultimate 3D set, get both Quinta and Babibi sets. Quite expensiive are they are half of the kit's cost. Can someone tell Q or B their grey is off? Dai

That’s the ultimate cockpit! Nice job. But wow, that’s got to be over $50 right there!!?

I ordered the Babibi because the Quinta was not availiable then. When Q became available then I ordered it. The Babibi set does not include the parts for the seats but has extra parts for the panels. I do not think you need both to justify for the cost. Now Reskit is into it too. Dai

Howdy fellow modelers,

Start to look like a F4 now.  Make sure the upper wing raised rectangular pieces are parallel with the long axis of the plane. I would rather have these molded in rather than drilling holes then install the panels. Some builds on the Net have these panels placed slightly off. A note about the Babibi 3D set is that it only provides panels for the cockpit. Nothing for the seats. Dai

Ok gang,

I need some expert help here. I see some F4B without the top rectangular bulges. I plan to use the VF 84 Jolly Rogers and on the Academy version, there are no bulges. The picture below does not show any bulges. How do I know if my version has the bulges or not even if I choose other schemes? Thank you for your expert replies. Dai

Howdy all,

Not much progress but at least moving along. I do not understand why Tamiya does not just have the vent to be glued on the intake rather than having a big connecting piece that resulted in a long seam ? A tip here. If you need to remove the paint along the mating surface, do not scrape or sand it off as that will destroy the tight fit of the parts. Rather use Levelling thinner on a moist cotton bud to remove. Do NOT use commercial airbrush cleaner as it will destroy the plastic. Dai

Hello all,

On the intake piece, there is a small seam on top that you need NOT to remove. They may appear like a raised seam from 2 uneven mating surfaces that needs clean up but actually are there. I accidentally clean up the seams so now I have to put them back. Dai

Hello all,

More good stuff coming. The Quickboost fuel dump is much more detailed than the kit's and highly recommended. For some reasons I could not get the side intakes to fit well to the fuse and hence you see some puty work.  The seamless intakes are luxury since the gaps on the intakes are very difficult to notice on the kit. But plus side is the resin is already in insignia white so that saves you a step. These are drop in fit. The movable tail assembly has more play that I like so likely I will glue it in. Dai

On her feet finally.  This is a very daunting and complex kit when you look at the sprues and the booklet. A massive far cry from the Monogram F4J I built in the 80’s. Not my usual WW2 fighters that I can get to priming stage in a few days. Just enjoy each step and I start to see some sort of completion of this kit. Dai
