TAMIYA F4B PHANTOM II 1/48.

Recommended Posts

Greetings to all,

I have mentioned about the Master Model F4B (short nose) pitot, RAM and AOA tubes. They are slightly smaller and more scale than the kits. I will have to draw in the missing panel lines. Dai

Hi all,

Since my plane will have some panels exposed, this suggests the plane is undergoing maintenance. With that in mind I will fabricate the pitot tubes cover with "remove before flight" tags. Now I think about it, it is ironic how I went extra miles to make the tubes more scale then to cover it. Dai

Great work so far!. I am intrigued as to how you picked out the silver pipework, very neat work.

I use 000 brush and carefully went over each pipe. The Black Dog set is cast resin rather than 3D so the details are not sharp although there are ample details. Dai

Hi all,

The VMFA 115 Phantoms some have the red borders on wheel covers and some do not. I do not have the actual photo so I cannot tell for sure. Let's leave the red trim off for now as it is tedious to do. Dai

Hello all,

Upon checking the reference in the AOA decal sheet, I found out my sample has the Coro-Gard aluminum anti corrosion paint applied at the intake lips and leading edges of the wings. Photos do showed some have this coating and some do not. That means one more step before the plane can be clear coated. Dai

Hello all,

Started applying the Coro-Gard paint on the leading edges and jet intakes. The color is dull aluminum as suggested by the AOA decals. The color is "Dull Aluminum" by Vallejo Metal Colors. Will sharpen the edges after the plane is clear coated. Any maskings over acrylic will rip the paint right off.  The last photo shows the width of the paint. Dai

Good choice of color for the leading edges. And what an amazing fit on the outer wing sections as revealed by those underside photos!

Hello all,

Finished painting the gear doors and FOD covers. Looking at the weathering I need to tone down a bit but looking at the real thing I think I am not over weathering. Dai

Hello all,

Finished painting the Coro-Gard on the leading edges. I painted the leading edge of the vertical tail only to realize later the all white tail of the VFMA-115 does NOT sport this feature so I had to remove it all off. I used the acrylic paint so easily removed with alcohol with minor touch up afterwards. Dai

Hi all,

As good as Tamiya is, there are annoying things that you have to deal with (that you should not have to). Mainly the seams on top of the canopy and on the side of the intakes. The old Monogram F4 has seam free canopy/intakes so why these are there on Tamiya's offering? Tamiya is the King of engineering but in other areas they fall short. Photos show before and after correction. Dai

Hello all,

Closer to the gloss coat stage. This particular scheme has the radome line placed away from the joint line while others end on the radome/fuselage joint. Wonder why that is the case? Dai
