TAMIYA F4B PHANTOM II 1/48.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Now onto the wing's stencils. Massive silvering even under repeated application of Microsol. Will need to dilute Solvaset and try to solve the problem. The decals printed by Microscale is not very good at all. The ones by Cartograf just melt in the panel lines even without any solution. Dai

Hello all,

All stencils applied. Now will be the gloss coat. I actually find applying stencils is relaxing and enjoying activity when not rushed or frustrated. If you can do Phantom's stencils you can do anything thrown at you. Dai

Howdy all,

The project is now completed. Here are my takes...

PROS:

1. The best kit of the B variant in 1/48 scale. I have not built the Academy but I think Tamiya tops this one.

2. Detailed cockpit and wheel bays.

3. Nice compliment of under wings loadings.

4. Posable flaps and air brakes.

5. Optional close or open ladder and refueling proble.

6. Excellent engineering and fit in general.

CONS:

1. Poor thick decal. Consistent problem over the years with Tamiya.

2. Poor resolution of the decals for the missiles. You can see the dots on the bands if look closely.

3. Seam lines on clear parts and on top of the intake trunks. Even the old Monogram F4J did not have these mold lines.

4. Some sink marks on the flaps.

5. Injector marks on the missiles.

6. Fit of the intake trunks could be problematic if not careful.

7. Lack of cockpit mirrors.

The Black Dog detail set is cast in resin rather than 3D printed so some clean up is a must. Too bad the top of the fuse resin is warped so I could only use 1/2. The RAM propeller blades should be done with PE instead.  The decals I use are from AOA, Furball Aero Design and Bulleyes. I use all three to maximize the use of Cartograft decals as they are excellent. I use AOA stencils printed by MicroScale and LOTS and LOTs of Microsol is needed. This stencil set will be destroyed by Solvaset so please take note.  A big mistake on this project is the use of Master Model brass pitot tubes. Way too much work for very little noticable gain.

Congratulations on finishing your phantom…great looking model!

That is 3 months and one day of this project. I had to start a new build due to some lost panel lines that I was unable to restore. I do wish I have the skill like you. Dai

Happy Sunday everyone,

Woke up this morning and added some items I forgot last night. The hydraulic jacks inside the cockpit and correct the vertical antenna on top of the fuse with the right one. Also added some tiny circular lens on the bottom of the fuse. Now I can finally call it finished. Dai

Hi all,

Remember the first one with some missing panel lines and rivets? Now I look at it, the fault was so tiny that I really did not have to start over.  But I did so now I have a spare F4 that I need to complete. A waste if I do not. I will do in an unique striking color QF-4B. Unless I am wrong the drone does not process a milion stencils? Now I have to find the correct International Orange paint and any help will be appreciated. Dai

I remember I used Model Master Internal Orange for my Hasegawa QF-4B.

Unfortunately like the Phantoms Model Master Paints are gone now.

You might consider AK or some of the various Orange Colors out of the Gunze Paint line?
