SAAB JA37 Viggen, Jetmads 1/32

Recommended Posts

Part 2

I cut the rudders from the casting blocks...without snapping anything off (yay)

IMG_5430.JPG

IMG_5431.JPG

IMG_5432.JPG

Glued the rudder to the tail fin

IMG_5433.JPG

Added the  actuator housing.

IMG_5434.JPG

And dry fitted the fin...this won´t cause any problems at least !

IMG_5435.JPG

Next I added the housings to the flaps. The flaps on JA are different from the AJ family because the slats move as one and have an extra actuator and the inner and outer flaps are joined. Jetmads could have done the flaps as one piece.

IMG_5436.JPG

Then I glued in the actuator housings to the wings. the outer most is the extra one  on the JA.

IMG_5437.JPG

IMG_5438.JPG

Last I did a dry fit of the Oerlikon KCA pack... will need some work too but I can´t put it into place until the fuselage is joined.

IMG_5439.JPG

That was all for today! The progress has slowed down somewhat but soon the fuselage joining will happen and then it gets interesting again!

Cheers!

Is that a light I see at the end of the tunnel?

I's Sunday and time for some news for you again 😄

Ok, done sanding.....I hope. Don´t know until it´s primed!

IMG_5455.JPG

IMG_5456.JPG

I´ll be darned....it actually looks good, still things to do but the blending into the fuselage is done. Now I have to fix the blending at the rear and fix the damages....and restore all details.....ugh.

Part 2

Well all that has to wait, now I´ll deal with this scary thing!

I need to remove the windshield from the castingblock without ruining anything!

IMG_5463.JPG

So of course I brought forward The Dremel! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

IMG_5464.JPG

Ziiing! and it was off the casting block!

IMG_5465.JPG

To remove the flash I scribe with a knife alonf the frame on the outside and the inside.

IMG_5466.JPG

And then the scary part when I use pliers to break off the flash!

So far so good!

IMG_5467.JPG

and the other side...

IMG_5468.JPG

But when removing the front part my luck ran out and I got a small crack into the frame!! I removed the rest of the flash by sanding!

IMG_5469.JPG

The fit into the fuselage was extrodinary good however....in fact it stuck there without glue!

IMG_5470.JPG

IMG_5471.JPG

Next it was time to mask it on the outside and the inside.

IMG_5472.JPG

IMG_5473.JPG

Shot Alclad black primer along the frames inside and outside

IMG_5474.JPG

Removed the masking on the inside.

IMG_5475.JPG

And stuck it into place.

IMG_5476.JPG

Finally I masked the cockpit first with tack-it rolls and then with tape.

IMG_5477.JPG

IMG_5478.JPG

and that was it for today! Some boring scribing to do tomorrow...

Cheers!

I´m a scriber man and I´m ok....

Oh my, almost forgot it's friday and time for an update!

Yet another necessary step is to restore all that was lost during the sanding....

This is another chore that I loathe, perhaps because I´m not really that good at it.

These ar the weapons of choice: Tamiya scriber, an awl, a scratch tool, knife, Tamiya bendy tape and Dymo tape

IMG_5479.JPG

Put the bendy tape along the upper edge of the wing fillet.

IMG_5480.JPG

IMG_5482.JPG

And made a  gazillion soft soft pulls with the Tammy scriber, that seems to be a bit  dull 😕

IMG_5481.JPG

Next I did the panellines in the fillet and restored rivets too.

IMG_5483.JPG

IMG_5484.JPG

And restored lost fuselage and wing details

IMG_5485.JPG

IMG_5486.JPG

Now I have a few blemishes to take care of....

IMG_5487.JPG

IMG_5488.JPG

IMG_5489.JPG

I decided to start with the tail....felt easiest 😛

I masked up for putty and then I added green stuff generously and removed the masks.

Part 2

Now I was quite fed up with putty and scribing...I need to glue something!

That something ended up to be the wing pylons.

I simply broke them off the castingblock, the were attached really thinnly, like flash.

IMG_5492.JPG

Cleaned up the parts...

IMG_5493.JPG

Found a tiny airbubble in one of the pylons, fixed it real fast with green stuff.

IMG_5494.JPG

IMG_5495.JPG

And the pylons ready to go on.

IMG_5496.JPG

They fit quite well....whew 😛

IMG_5497.JPG

And all four are on... now I´ll let the kit rest until tomorrow....when I start sanding again 😛

IMG_5498.JPG

Cheers!

Hmmm..now they're visible.  Maybe you unlocked a portal by posting again and they magically appeared : )

I feel like the guy in that story -- he went to work one day and realized he had locked himself out of the car.  He asked his wife to drive over and bring the spare key and he went up to his office.   Later he came down to check on the car and realized it was actually open.   He thought about how his wife would be fuming if she arrives to see that she wasted her time, so he promptly locked the door back.    Just then his wife called to say she had come by to unlock it.  : )

Quite impressive my friend!

Always loved the Viggen, such a wonderful beast!

Glad you was able to rectify the issue of the kit, but I've no doubt of this!!!!

Thanks Gianni 😄 I´ll try to do it justice  😄

Closer to the closing...

The usual Sunday update!

I begun with some sanding....surprise! 😛

IMG_5512.JPG

Actually it didn´t look half bad after primer...just some small blemishes I need to fix.

IMG_5513.JPG

IMG_5514.JPG

I use Tamiya putty for this since it´s much finer grain that the green stuff.

IMG_5516.JPG

With that slabbed on I sanded the droptank, have to make the middle seam disapear.

IMG_5517.JPG

IMG_5518.JPG

With primer and a polish it actually made the cut....sweet!

IMG_5519.JPG

BAck do sanding the rear and rescribe it...

IMG_5522.JPG

Well with a primer coat and a polish I´m actually happy with this...next it´s the nasties at the front wingroots...but that´s for another day.

IMG_5524.JPG

Cheers!

It´s Friday again, allbeit very early...and it´s Christmas eve, wich is the big one here in Sweden with wailing kids and drunk uncles and pressies everywhere.
So I make this update when I still can her myself think And as a Christmas gift I´ll do a double update today 😄

First out is this:

Suddenly it happens

Ok begun with sanding today...who knew:P

Anyways the repairs look good but I can´t be sure until it´s primed.

IMG_5525.JPG

IMG_5526.JPG

IMG_5528.JPG

Well I can live with that 😄

IMG_5529.JPG

IMG_5530.JPG

Well now what? I had to scratch my noggin a bit before I realised it was time....

IMG_5531.JPG

Well, I slapped on glue and hoped for the best!

The seam is not so bad actually... I can work with that 😄

IMG_5532.JPG

A little step on the belly..... no biggies.

IMG_5533.JPG

The spine looks great 😄

IMG_5534.JPG

Well that´s that, the fuselage is glued and it is huge!

IMG_5535.JPG

With the fuselage glued the the glueing of the flaps are almost an antiklimax 😛

The Flaps are fused on JA and move as one, that´s why there is an extra actuator.

IMG_5536.JPG

IMG_5537.JPG

Lastly I glued the canard flaps in place...

IMG_5538.JPG

And that wraps up this short but dramatic update....sheesh I got to make a plase for the fuselage to rest while I´m working on it.

IMG_5539.JPG

Cheers!

Part 2

So I glued on the canards...needed some tape to hold them in position until the glue cured. The fit is good but the loss of some resin at the edges  at the wing roots needs to be cleaned.

IMG_5558.JPG

IMG_5559.JPG

Added the tail fin as well.

IMG_5560.JPG

Getting seriously big and heavy!

IMG_5561.JPG

Lastly I filled the gap between the KCA and the fuselage with acrylic putty and just wiped away the excess.

IMG_5562.JPG

yeah, there is that option...but I already built the reverser in parking and I don't have a pilot figure.....and well I don't like my models flying 😛

Growling Sidewinder has permanently polluted my perception of the Viggen.  I ALWAYS think of Sven banging on the engine when I see the aircraft.

LOL , very specific Viggen triggered asociations 😛
