AMT 1/72nd B-52g "Memphis Belle III" 59-2594

Recommended Posts

A couple more in progress pictures while I think of what to do next with Memphis Belle III

First picture is my test slug to get the length of wire curved and fitting correctly. Then I drilled tiny holes into the actual model landing gear and moved the wires over.

I'm not going to go crazy on this model but the two hydraulic hoses that run on each bogey is noticeably missing.

After that is my attempt at fabricating the radar dish that is obviously missing below all the ECM gear that Blackdog detail set molded.

I  think they  might have used the boneyard as their master because all of those radar antennas are missing too.

The hoses on the bogeys are not painted yet and I still have more to go.... Enjoy

Go easy on my BUFF radar antenna because I've heard of no one else attempting to make one from pictures

Very nice, simple and effective addition of copper wire and plastic sheet to spruce things up. Well done, sir

Agree, nice work Trooper.

I was able to mount the radar dish in the approximate location earlier this morning, and I could almost hear it scanning back and forth, like it did on the real ones.

I think it looks the part and fills the void that is present from the Blackdog resin detail set and lack of a dish.

That's all for now... time to go and do work.

Aircommando sir,

I'm not sure about that radar (in real life) but I was ECM for 20 years and can't count how many times I climbed up the crew hatch to check on my guys, only to find them radiating in free space from one or more of the Belly Antennas behind the crew hatch... that's a big No No, but it was done quite often.

I also have three girls... so "they got me"...

So today I was able to add a bit more to Memphis Belle III. Not a whole bunch per say, but I think I may be getting very close to putting it all together and just spraying gloss, decal it, then flat and weather it for the win.

Haven recently purchased multiple sets of the latest Buff decals by Kursad. I have decided to only use the actual "Memphis Belle III" name from the Cutting Edge decal sheet because it lacks in detail by comparison to the Caracal sheet.

Today, I was able to get the raised nose on as well as the locking struts that hold it open. I added the gear doors and the .050 Cal guns in the turret at the rear. they still need painted but its a step closer to being complete.

Every BUFF model I have ever looked at has misses the wing leading edge landing lights. it's a simple fix.... I used a jewelers flat file and filed at the appropriate location outboard of the engines until I had a recess deep enough to accommodate a MV Lens that will be inserted and (final step) covered with crystal clear cellophane tape for the lens cover.

I also made the twin light assembly that is seen on the Co-pilots side landing gear.

Adding the landing gear doors will allow me to put into the semi-recess on them MV lens' as well...another missed detail the is obvious to me.

Ok Y'all, just a short update... I'm sure the glue has dried more and I can continue with progress.

All looks great Trooper; which jet is that in the background?

Chris

The picture in the background is "Triple Duece" 58-0222, I took the photo at Eaker when we were both there.

She's looking good! A bit wrinkleybut aren't we all that were born in the 50's!

A Lt. pilot and I were talking the other day and he said the B-52 was big. I told him

when we'd we'd fly into Guam and park the C-5 you could watch the old D model

BUFF's roll down the runway in a cloud of black smoke and disappear off the cliff

to be seen a minute or so later climbing up to go fly. When my dad was at Edwards

when I was a young guy I'd watch the B-52 taxi out with the X-15 under it's wing.

Cheers...Ron

Here is a teeny tiny bit of progress on my BUFF, Memphis Belle III 59-2594.

Somewhere/Somehow, I wound up with the Decal sheet that has all the small decals on it from the Modelcollect version of their modern B-52g. I decided to use the wing striping from it that represent the wing walk areas on the real plane.

A little adjusting here and there and a couple of hours later, one wing was completed... I'm still in the process adding the small "No-step and other warning decals on it but that *hit is tedious.

I decided to take a break from that part and add some to the other parts of the plane.

I only used the actual Memphis Belle III Noseart name and black tail number from the B-52g \Cutting edge sheet #5. The rest of the decals will come from a sheet I bought extra from Caracal site.

I'm trying to add a few more decals/details each day but other responsibilities are hindering that so far... More to come.

I've managed to scrounge the wing pylon blanking adapters that the pylons mount to from my parts box and an open -D version I had.

sometimes less is more and in this case, that's what I'm going for.

That's looking really good! Gotta love the old BUFF.

This last weekend I watched a couple of videos of

B-52H 61-0023 that was being used for a turbulance

test and had its tail ripped off. They flew it for several

hours and managed to get it on the ground to be repaired

and fly again.  Tough bird!

Cheers...Ron
