I got rid of my FB account earlier this year along with Redit. I'm really not a big fan of the big corporate social media sites anymore. I'll just stick with the ARC forums to share hobby related things. While I don't have a lot of posts I do have a Spitfire build in the gallery and I've been a member of the forums since 2003.

I still like forums (ARC, LSP, and I still read HS more-or-less regularly), but the FB groups are also useful to me.  There are several that are subject-matter specific that do have quite knowledgable individuals participating.  I like the ease of posting photos there, vs. here.  I much prefer a direct upload to using a third-party host, but FB can serve as that third-party host in a pinch as well.

I have two Facebook accounts. One personal that I have to keep because of work. And the other account is my hobbies.

The amount of information and quick responses I receive on Facebook are fantastic. I also appreciate the translation feature enabling me to chat with Japanese, Israeli, etc modelers. I also follow non modeling groups that are fans of wwii ships, Japanese aircraft, IDF airplanes, etc that provide a great amount information/photographs.

I use both, enjoy this site more then fakebook.  Search feature here is better than fb, and I trust folks here more then those on fb.

FWIW: my FB feed is models, and dogs.  I flushed everyone who isn't family because evrything is political (the no politics rule here is welcome).

I haven't posted much lately as I am moving and that seems to take most of my life away.

I use both. There are very good Modeling groups ... and some .. not so good groups.  The other thing That is rally great on Facebook are groups where people share pictures, of just about anything ... Old airliners... Phantoms,  ... Particular airlines of a certain period, just about any airplane or car that ever existed which has even a tiny following. That is where the real treasure is. I think it is so popular because it is much easier to share pictures.

The barrier for entry is very low. You can start at group, and it does not cost you any money, you do not have to have the know-how to install, and maintain forum software. The draw back is the concern over privacy, and the very vague rules facebook has. You might end up in "Facebook Jail" over a simple misunderstanding, with little to no recourse.

What I love about forums, is that is much easier to find past discussions, and it is a great way to document something like a build. If you are luck and the Forum stays on line, the whole thread can remain intact forever.  I prefer the more organized structure of a forum.  I do not come here as often as I used to, but I am not going to complain that there is less discussion, because I could very easily start a discussion, or contribute more  myself If I were not so lazy.

This is an interesting discussion and I have enjoyed seeing the different points of view.

Is it possible to get into facebook for a specific interest (modelling of course) without being sucked into the rabbit hole of looking at pictures of cats and people spouting their politics and who knows what else?  I confess I have never looked at facebook except over my wifes shoulder as she is checking things out.  My reluctance to join has always been the "Big Brother" aspect of someone looking at what I am doing and using my information against me at some point.

I get what Dave Roof is saying about social media, and I agree that this is a social media site.  But ARC has a very limited scope, mainly aircraft modeling (sorry all you armor, ship, car and figure modelers).  Which makes it easy to find what you are interested in and learn more about.  I would like to hear more about how those who use facebook use it for modelling purposes and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Yes .. You can set up a profile, and you do not have to add any Friends, just join groups. If you end up adding friends you can adjust settings so their posts of cats, kids, and what they are eating do not show up on the timeline. I have just a few family members who do not post often, my whole facebook is really just pictures of Airplanes, Cars, models, and discussion about these topics.

Social media is good for people like Dave Roof because the analytics, as limited as they are on facebook, show he that what he is doing is reaching people.

He doesnt have that on here so cant see if there are any results to his efforts. Not that there are no results, he just cant see them.

On the Jet Forum on here there is a thread about the B-1B. Can you imagine something as interesting to follow as that on facebook?

Facebook is good for odd snippets of information, casual chit chat, pictures for refrence, and as a sales/advertising tool.

Arc is good for more indepth modelling information, build logs, sharing tooling tips and ideas and selling on kits you dont want anymore, or buying kits people dont want anymore.

Same here. But once you realize something simple as your phone listening in on your conversations, it’s just not worth adding to the data gathering.
We play a game at work during lunch.  Bring up a topic or say we need to buy something or talking about products with our phones out on the table. Then we start watching all the ads pop up within minutes.

You know I didnt believe all that about your phone listening in to your conversations until while we were at work I was talking to a mate about cyberpunk and steampunk things.

Its not a subject Im interested in at all, he is but I couldnt care less about it.

The following day I fired up my facebook and several of the wish adverts on there where cyberpunk related items.

The same thing came up on my wish app too...

Its not a subject Ive ever looked for at all on there...

We usually get carried away and discuss “adult bedroom toys” and escort services to see if it comes up on our wives phones too.   I’ll look into something like a chainsaw and the wife gets ads for them.
so I see sex toys pop up on the wife’s phone and get to tease her. Yea, I’m evil that way.  Of course I’m the guy that will toss a box of condoms in a random shoppers cart at the store too.

Last Christmas I gave my Mom a smartphone.  It wasn't a week later she called me, all paranoid, that people were listening to her and hacking her phone.  I turned off all the microphone permissions and told her about "cookies"....

Speaking of cookies, for a while there I was getting pop-up ads for "Hot Asian Models" after visiting ARC - a "Modeling" website.
