flybywire
Hi! Could somebody please explain the possible differences between the long-released Hasegawa 1/72 SR-71 with D-21B kit #2041 and the upcoming #2395. The upcoming is an A version with GTD-21B drone, how is the airframe different from other versions, and how is D-drone different from a GTD one?
habu2
Two things - the SR-71 kits are identical (maybe different decals) and the SR-71 never carried the D-21 drone. edit - all the Hasegawa releases - and the Academy/Minicraft releases - contain identical plastic parts, with one exception - #2278 included resin parts for the “Big Tail” version. . Jay Chladek
I concur with habu2, except for perhaps the decal sheet the more recent Hasegawa offering will have no differences in mithe plastic. The Academy kits are copied from the Hasegawa kit, but there are differences as the Academy parts if I recall correctly have recessed details while Hasegawa's are raised. Dave Williams
Until the new kit #2395 actually comes out, there is no telling whether it will actually be a correct M-21 with a correct D-21 drone, or simply a reissue of their old SR-71 w/ drone kit with new decals. Hasegawa’s nomenclature is messed up. They are calling the kit a “SR-71 Type A”, which isn’t right. There was the A-12 and the SR-71, two separate aircraft. The SR-71A was the standard SR-71 most people know. The SR-71B was a trainer with a raised second cockpit. The SR-71C was another trainer similar to the B, but cobbled together from the rear fuselage of a YF-12A and the front fuselage of a SR-71 test airframe. Also, the GTD-21B was the B-52 launched version of the drone. The D-21 launched from the M-21 was different, but the artwork for the new kit still shows the GTD-21B version with the twin long pitot tubes, and the kit still references “GTD-21B”. In fact, the artwork still shows a SR-71 also. https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10837588 I’m betting it’s just the same old kit with new decals instead of being corrected for the M-21/D-21. Jay Chladek
To date, the only proper A-12 Blackbird kit in the works that I know of is the Modelcollect kit in 1/72. And yes, this is NOT the A-12 killer Dorito in 1/48 which they are also working on.
flybywire
Thanks everyone! Everything now is crystal clear!
habu2
The M-21 “mothership” was a modified A-12 airframe, differences between the A-12 and SR-71 are well documented, specifically the forward chine and aft fuselage/tail shapes.
