admiralcag
I'm looking for a donor kit to build up a decent HH-3E in 1/72 scale. Which one would my best bet? Vern
andyf117
Whilst any of the Cyberhobby cockpits probably best represent a US aircraft, the pilot's seats are undersized... ....so a modern Airfix HC.4 or HAR.3 - but not any of the re-releases of the old kit - would be a better option... ....although any of the mid-90's onward Revell versions would also suffice - again, not one of the older issues... ....one of which was a re-boxing of the Fujimi kit, as was the Testors - currently available under the Italeri label... ....the Fujimi cockpit is more basic than those described above - but not as basic as the older Airfix and Revell. As for the rest of the interior, for the HH-3E you'll mainly need troop seats: ....Cyberhobby's examples were very undersized; Airfix's aren't very accurate, though salvageable; Revell also supplied stowed versions, except in the first version; Fujimi only provides one inaccurate 'bench' seat. Don't know what your starting point kit is, but whether Revell, Lindberg or Aurora HH-3E, the main and tail rotor assemblies are both best replaced. For those I'd suggest Revell (with main blades modified at the roots); otherwise Cyberhobby or Fujimi (Revell/Testors/Italeri) straight from the box... ....Airfix's are flimsy, lack head and hub detail, and need modifying also. Overall, to get the most use out of a donor kit, I'd suggest a later Revell issue is probably your best bet - hope this helps!
Loach Driver
Whirlybirds in the UK have or had an HH-3E in resin. That might be a good place to start but for added finesse a modern SH-3/ Sea King kit would probably be no harm. LD.
admiralcag
I have the Revell, Aurora, and Starfix kits. The Revell is the most likely candidate for the job. The Jolly Green Giant just doesn't get any love 😪 Thanks for the info! Vern
