EDUARD P-51D 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

The decals are Extra Decals. They are thick reminding me of the old Monograms' offerings. They do respond to Micro Sol and Solvaset but do not conform well to the panel lines or rivets. Even with the clear coat applied, the decals can be easily removed via tape. Dai

Hi all,

Onto the display case next to the signed X-1 by Chuck Yeager and P-51D by Clarence "Bud" Anderson. The lights were painted with transparent Vallejo paints but they are very opaque. Too bad the fuel tanks do not fit to the pylons as I would love to have them on for better look. Dai

Hello all...

The under wing looks so bare so I am going to attach the bombs as well as the rockets. P-51Ks were delivered to the RAAF late 45 and after the war so likely these may had been fitted with Korean area rockets. Sadly the bombs do not fit at all to the pylons so I will have to find a way to mount them. Eduard just molded the pylons, bombs, tanks without any kind of mounting mechanisms on them. Rather unacceptable with today's standard. Dai

Hi all...

Well I thought I was done with project... I could not leave the tanks not mounted so I modified the kit's pylons to accept the tanks. Well after a few hours the pylons look butchered so I removed what is left of the pylons and installed the Tamiya's pylons. They are slightly smaller but now I can finally install the tanks. Quite bold of a move at this stage in the game but why not to make me happy? I use the first time Mr Surfacer 1500 and I am sold. Went on smooth and dries very fast. No more clogging like the Badger's primer. I am happy that my Mustang has the drop tanks now. Dai

Hello all...

Repainted and now ready for fuel tanks and rockets. Although the same exact black primer and silver paint were used, you can see the mismatch here. You would think it should match but any time the painting was not done together in 1 sitting, mismatch will occur. Dai

Hi all

Now the project is completed. Thankfully after a wash/weathering and placement of tanks, rockets the mismatched mentioned earlier is non detectable.  For those who build the Eduard's Mustang do not install the pylons if you intend to install the bombs or tanks. Dai

Nice job persevering on a kit that should have been easier to get through.  The rockets add some visual appeal to the finished product.

Nice kit but with some annoying features. If I am to build a P-51D again, I would go for Tamiya kit. Ultra simple but effective kit. With Eduard, forget about mounting the tanks. Or ask someone who can give you the Tamiya pylons. If you want the 108 gallon tanks, Tamiya P-51B has them. These kits are not very expensive. Dai

dai, you did a great job on your Mustang!  I am currently working on mat own Eduard 1/48 P-51D, and while I am not building mine to the level of detail you built yours, I am not having the same problems you did.  I agree that this airplane is certainly not made anywhere close to the same fit as a Tamiya airplane model, particularly the the most recent ones like the 1/48 P-38F/G, H, and presumably the J (I don't have this one in hand yet), and the F-4B, and the F-14A and D, I haven't had many of the same difficulties that you encountered, though I'm only about 50% done.  Many of the fits where you encountered problems, I seem to have avoided the same difficulties.  Either I was just fortunate, or perhaps the moldings I got in my kit were somewhat better than what you ended up with.  In any event, again, your airplane turned out very nice, and I hope mine ends up as nice as yours when it's done!
