Very simple photo-etching technique?

Recommended Posts

Recently I saw this instruction video on how to a printed circuit board using only a laser printer, paper and ferric chloride (FeCl3). No masks / transparancies, no photo-resist, no UV light, very simple:

Here's a variation using HCl and H202:

I think the same method should work for photo-etching scale model parts. Has anyone tried that?

Our technicians at work use this method all the time, when we need a small board very quickly to work around a design error on a prototype system or an adapter/converter for a test fixture when we can't even wait for the 2-day quick PCB companies. However, the two-sided PCBs we use have fiber substrate between the two copper layers on each side - I am not sure how this method would work for a simple plate metal. You may have to print a mirror image of your pattern and apply it to the other side of the plate, or perhaps cover the entire back side and etch away everything but the masked area.
