John Tapsell
Out of curiosity, how common is it to see F15s without two-letter tailcodes - just seen a quartet of Cs of which two had codes and two didn't. Thanks, John
boom175
Not super uncommon. they could have been in a transfer from one unit to the next, Usually the losing unit will remove any distinctive markings. Or they just got back from the depot and was repainted. The tail codes and squadron badges are usually applied at the unit level. They will probably put them one the next time it goes in the hangar. John Tapsell
Thanks Craig - that might make sense. The 'coded' aircraft were 493rd FS (48 FW at Lakenheath). They are transitioning to F35s at present so it might be that the codes on the other two F15s have been removed already, prior to re-assignment?

Some of thier jets are already back stateside so those you saw are probably headed back soon.
11bee
Whilst on the subject of tail codes, has the AF reduced their size lately? Saw a pic of the Aviano based F-16 that belly landed last week and the codes were only the same size as the last three of the serial. Same on those new LN coded F-35’s. John Tapsell
There are a bunch of Aviano F-16s at Lakenheath at present - saw a couple in the Mach Loop this morning but not close enough to check the tailcode size.
