Tamiya 1/48 F-4B Phantom II, VMFA-314 US Marine Corps

Recommended Posts

Here is my just-completed Tamiya F-4B Phantom II is US Marine Corps markings.

The build thread is here:

The base was given to me by a friend.    The unit depicted, VMFA-314, wasn’t carrier-based but I like the overall effect.  The kit itself was a pre-release white box that was given by Tamiya to a local hobby shop, and the shop owner asked me to build it to display it at his business.  The kit did not come with decals or masks, and only photocopied directions.

I can’t say enough good things about the kit in terms of fit, finish or engineering.  This was simply an amazing build.

I used Eduard seat belts, KA Models 3-D printed resin exhaust nozzles, Eduard resin TER racks, napalm canisters and MK.82 iron bombs.  The Mk.4 HIPEG gun pod is from Hasegawa Weapons Set C.  The decals are a mix of Furball Aero-Design, AOA Decals stencil set and TwoBobs for the AIM-7 Sparrow missile markings. (which came from the kit). The only scratch building I did was the wiring for the backwater’s instrument panel.

I used Hataka lacquers, ModelMaster enamels and Tamiya acrylics.  Weathering was done with selected pre- and post-shading, and Mig Oilbrushers and Streaking Effects, along with Mig and Ammo pigments and oil pastel chalks.

I wanted to show some wear and tear and dirt/grime build but I didn’t want it to look *too* banged- and beaten-up.  Photos were taken with an iPhone 11.

If I’m not mistaken VMFA-314 was based of Chu Lai during the early years of the Vietnam War.

From the pictures I have of 314 MattN you have captured the look of a well used Marine Phantom during its deployment during combat conditions.

Well done and amazing job on all of those stencils too.

Take care,

Mr. Happy
