John Matthews Art
Any fans of the Voodoo? They've always been of interest to me. The design began as a long-range escort fighter. But, once faster, higher-flying jet bombers came into service, the concept of the escort fighter became irrelevant. McDonnell redesigned the plane as a tactical fighter/bomber/reconnaissance aircraft and as a long-range interceptor. For its time, the word "Fast" really didn't begin to describe it. It set an absolute speed record in 1957 of 1,207.6 MPH during "Operation Firewall." During "Operation Sun Run," an RF-101C flew from Los Angeles to New York City and back in six hours and 46 minutes. Its service ceiling was 58,400 feet, and it could get there in around two minutes climbing at 36,500 feet per minute. I've featured the F-101B in some of my artwork. The two pieces here feature Voodoos that were once flown by the 60th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS) when they were based at Otis AFB in Massachusetts. Air Defense Command interceptors had some very colorful paint schemes, and "The Fighting Crows" were no exception. Here's one of my latest pieces. It's a 24X18 inch print titled "Crow Hop," and features a pair of 60th FIS Voodoos. I created this 36X12 inch profile as a companion piece... Please check out more of my artwork featuring the "One-Oh-Wonder" at my website. Edited July 28, 2022 by John Matthews Art fix bad links
GreyGhost
Wow, very beautiful piece John ..! I feel fortunate that I saw the Canadian Air Force 409 Squadron fly a four ship demo in 1982 at March AFB ... Only time I got the chance to see Voodoos fly ... -Gregg

I appreciate it. That sounds like a great show! Unfortunately I've never seen any flying "live," and I don't remember seeing any flying about when I was growing up around St. Louis. Lots of Phantoms though.
