hemspilot
Howdy y'all, we all know that 62-12200 was the original YRF-4C converted from an F-4B and as such had the thin wing and short burner cans. Did it receive a whole new wing or were the slats (for the FBW project) just retrofitted, I cannot see any bulges on the wings. Also at what point in time did it receive the -8 J79s and the longer burner cans?
aircommando130
12200 had the thin wing it's whole life. I think when I saw it at Edwards way back the slats were welded on in the open/deployed position. It was also the test aircraft for the F-4E. Had a vulcan 20mm installed in the RF nose. She currently sits in the AF Museum. Cheers...Ron

YF-4E prototype showing the long burner cans as well as the initial gun installation: http://www.airwar.ru/image/idop/fighter/f4e/yf-4e.jpg Safe to say it got the long burner cans as part of the YF-4E program as aircommando130 said. Slats were installed for the Agile Eagle program and were fixed in the extended position on the original thin wing as can be seen here: Edited October 29, 2022 by Nebbor
