Modelling the SU-37 Flanker-F (or Terminator)?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I was curious if anyone had any suggestions on a good way of attacking this project. I know there are conversion sets from Wolfpack Design and SOL that may be floating around out there for the Academy SU-27. And before I start the arduous process of attempting to track down a discontinued resin set from a decade ago, I figured I'd see if any Flanker experts out there may know of a better way.

From what I know, Minibase, GWH, and Kinetic are currently issuing the best Flankers on the market. Is there a way to Frankenstein's monster a Terminator together since it's unique features went on to exist on later Flanker variants?

Flankerman was doing that one as part of a dual build, a while back, here on ARC.  It was in 72nd but how he was cutting up the base kits might help.  It was in the In Progress section but you may have to look back a year or two ago.

I went back in my stuff and found a few of his pics I copied and they’re dated Sep 2019 so the article should be around that time.
It looks like he was using Trumpeters Su33 and a canard Su 30 as the base kits, cutting and swapping large chunks of the forward fuselages.  Hope that helps you find it.

I have this as a project and I used a 1/48 Kitty Hawk Su30 fuselage canard section to mate to a 1/48 Kitty Hawk Su27 front fuselage. By using these you get the single seat, correct IRST position and canards required for the Su37. Just need to rescribe the nose, I can live with the slightly wrong (small) radome section. Ideally I would like to have used a Su35 front section but was not sure it would mate correctly to the Su30 one. I'll try and dig up some pictures, project is on hold at the moment due to loss of builders mojo.

Found the pictures:

Areas marked to aid the cutting of the parts. KH Su27 top, KH Su30 bottom. Note rear of the Su27 needs to be cut in for the installation of the thrust-vectoring nozzles.

Su30 canard sections finished, now the cutting of the Su27.

The portion with the gun is the trickiest so did that first.

Fits pretty well I think.

Both sides done, just dry fitted here.

No, taken with my iPhone, lens covered with greasy fingerprints. And pics taken for reference, not to win photo contests.

To hell with camera/picture quality. This is a cool project, and I'm happy to see it. Do you have a build log here that I missed? I happened to find one of the mythological Su-37 conversion sets from back in the day, but don't have it on the bench yet. I doubt I would have the skills to kit-bash as you're doing. Very cool stuff!

No build log here or anywhere else. Maybe when this Su37 project gets going again. I think getting one of the older SOL/Wolfpack conversions installed is more difficult than what I did. Problem is more likely getting the correct parts.

Combining the upper fuselages of Zvezda's Su-33 and Su-30SM is a much easier job as I suggested to Ken a couple of years ago, with the windfall of a Chinese J-17 naval two seater.

Nice work in the meantime.

That might be the case in 1/72 but in 1/48 there are no Zvezda Flankers. Unfortunately Kitty Hawk went out of business so going my route is getting increasingly difficult too. Maybe something similar can be done with the GWH Su27 and Su30SM but since GWH has no spare parts service that I know of that will be an expensive route. I was lucky to get the Su30SM top- and bottom fuselage + canards from Kitty Hawk before they went belly up. In hindsight I should have ordered a set of Su30MK vertical stabs at the same time but got them from a Hobby Boss Su30MKK kit at a later stage.
