2022 - A Very Good Year

Recommended Posts

For models at least.  I managed to get 27 kits built this year.  All 1/48 but a 1/32 P-40N. Taking a break until January.  Towards the end of the year I got on a Phantom kick.  I have more in my stash so I will try to get those done for 2023.

Thanks for looking

Totally my subjective opinion.

#1  Tamiya F-4B

#2  Any Zoukei-Mura F-4

#3 Any Academy F-4

#4 Hasegawa F-4 with engraved panel lines

#5 Hasegawa F-4 with raised panel lines

Those are the F-4s I have experience with.

Waiting to see the new Meng kits.

Building a newer kit like a Z-M kit along side an older kit you can take some of the detail that the newer kits have and try to replicate it on the older one.  On the Hasegawa F-4s I added the supports for the air intake splitter plate that are present on the Z-M kit.  When you have the detail in front of you it is easier at least for me to then copy it.  Same with the panel lines.  I was able to use the Z-M kit as a guide to add some panel line and rivet details to the Hasegawa kit.

Wow. Very productive year!  This will be my first full year of retirement, so I’m gonna see what I can get accomplished.

I only work 2 days a week and my wife lets me spend more time than I should in my little work room.

Ahh….That’s the biggest difference. Mine heads out to work at 5:45 am 3 or 4 days a week. But by 8 am I’m getting my “Honey Do” list texted to me.   On her days off, she’s like the Energizer Bunny and expects me to keep up with her.  Always something that needs to be done around the home. (According to her) Unless it’s over 85 degrees and then it’s all good and time to float in the lake.

Nice work for the year !!

BTW- Which did you prefer the Tamiya/Hasegawa F4U-4 (Hasegawa F4U-4 nose matched to a Tamiya F4U-1D) build or the Hobbyboss F4U-4??  I know the Hobbyboss i more simple .

I ask because I have a Haseagwa -4 in the stash with many extras

Steve,

HobbyBoss has a way of making a mess out of Navy canopies.  They are too wide and bulbous.  I've noticed this on the Hellcat and the Corsair.  The corsair is also missing some details but at the moment I can't remember what they are.  The Hasegawa kit is old and doesn't have the inscibed panels but it is pretty right in shape.  I had the extra Tamiya kit and it seemed simpe enough to graft the hasegawa nose onto the tamiya kit.  It was more of a challenge and so it was more satisfying in the end.  I had to scribe the detail that was raised.  Anyway to answer your question I would do the Hasegawa/Tamiya again if I had the kits.

Just out of curiousity, why is the radome so long on the F-16D?

I think it is distortion form a close-up picture with a wide angle lens.  I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it.  I will have to move back from the subjects from now on.
