Is ARC out of business....?

Recommended Posts

These forums are my homepage.  I visit other sites but this is my go to.  I go to Brit Modeller but that place is so pedantic.  People want to know the color of the knob on the flap lever of a 1907 fruitbat!  I would pay to keep this open.

I agree with you, I build everything, armor, aircraft, sci-fi, ships and cars. But this is the site I visit first. I will concur, I would pay to keep this site up and running.

Worried that this site may one day just disappear I've been searching for other sites to fill the void, if that happens. I gotta say, they are terrible, TONS of pop up ads which are very distracting and, just don't have what ARC has.

Somehow, someway, this site HAS TO be saved, it's honestly the best one out there IMO. I'd gladly pay a subscription fee if that's what would help keep the lights on.

Steve

There's Britmodeller which is excellent I find and probably the most similar alternative. Very active and doesn't seem plagued by ads, although I use an ad blocker.

I've been saving screencaps and printing ARC pages to PDF files. Particularly Tom Weinel's old posts.

I visit that one but, not too often. It's mostly 72nd WWII stuff that I have no interest in.

With AI's help, this entire forum can be updated to a modern forum, retaining majority if not all of the available content. This would help streamline some of the behind-the-scenes site management workload. It would also be much easier to interface Group Builds and special interest events with social media platforms. There will of course be some financial pains involved in the migration process, but I think we have enough dedicated members that with the right fund-raising events, we could make it happen. Just going to need the captain of the boat to jump on board with it.

And therein lies the problem. The Captain jumped ship a long time ago and left it to wander the waters aimlessly, while deck hands do their best to keep it from sinking.

I wondered if we could load everything into another site (wayback machine?) then migrate it into another website?

It will require the complete forum file though, like one you would make as a complete backup at the server level.

doesn't the site owner have to pay to keep the URL and server space? who's footing that bill? It would be awesome if the ownership (and bills) could be transferred to someone(s) who would take a more active say to day role. I mean at least update the SSL certificate, stuff like that...

What happens if Steve's credit card payments for the hosting/domain name expire/stop? I think he has it on autopay now.

This conversation has been going on for two years. No-one seems to know what happened to Steve. All the original mods seem to have left, just a couple of we the little people who remain behind with control of around (I don't know) most of the site. But we can not change the way Steve set it up. Can not add new stuff, just clean up the spam which seems to be greatly reduced for the past month. To be honest, I would not WANT the complete control. I barely understand what I am doing on the stuff I can fix. As for the money, maybe the company in charge forgot we exist? Or Steve paid a bunch in advance?

The only other option is to get a group of us that are willing and start a new site from scratch. We can use the same provider and create another name. Something we should consider, at some point this site will go down for any number of reasons with no one to be able to correct the issue. The sad part would be all the lost valuable information.

How much per month?

Reasonable yes,  Question is, who has the knowledge (not me) to run the site, then promise to stick around for a few years to keep up on running it and erasing several hundred spam messages a day?

....Luckily the spam has calmed down dramatically this month.

Moving all the good stuff from this site to a new one?

Getting back to daily (or at least weekly) updates?

Update the new site so spammers can not just come in and blast 50 or more crap messages on porn , cheap crap from China or gambling sites.

KEEPING the peace around here when someone gets their underwear in a knot and goes offside on someone as they disagree with a shade of grey. (or gray for you American types).

I have been threatened by people for trying to run this place. Seriously!! I am not worried if you want to crawl out from Mommies basement and fight for real try your luck. I was army for 12 years then worked a max security prison for the past 33.

It's a LOT of work, and I don't have half the abilities Steve had to run this place.

I and a couple others will stick around and help, but I am NOT running the show.

Calm down Phantom, no one was saying you would run the show, though you have been doing an awesome job of keeping the peace around here, there is no doubt that! If a new site were to be created, it would need to be a group effort with volunteers to moderate as well as a few invested officers to manage and referee a new site. I would be more than willing to be involved in any capacity to help.

The front page is a MASSIVE amount of data with its galleries and daily updates, etc. That’s where the bulk of

the Resource Center was intended to live and produce. It’s also where the bulk of the work lies. Trying to wrangle all that would not appeal to me. Moving it to a new entity would be problematic without consent or  agreement from Steve and that’s an improbability currently. The forum was just a side dish for the front page, but it’s where I spent more time. I only posted two galleries to main page. The content I was after was here. It was Steve’s vision and unless someone else has the same vision and devotion it would be so much easier to just form a new forum for the community and move on. Cut the time suck of the landing page. At this point I’m convinced it’s never going back to the way it was. Right click on whatever you want to save before it all vaporizes.
