Is ARC out of business....?

Recommended Posts

We need to establish a working group to hash out the details. There's likes and dislikes about the site that we want to keep or not repeat. Also need to look at other forums that are using this Invision service for their forums and compare.

Calm down Phantom, no one was saying you would run the show, though you have been doing an awesome job of keeping the peace around here, there is no doubt that! If a new site were to be created, it would need to be a group effort with volunteers to moderate as well as a few invested officers to manage and referee a new site. I would be more than willing to be involved in any capacity to help.

Calm down?  I am not even excited. Just saying I do not wish to run it. Only help. As Rick agreed to my statement, It would be a LOT of work. Just saving the good stuff Steve created is way beyond my computer ability. But I figure there must be a couple regulars around here who have the computer knowledge required. Would have to wonder if a new site would have to be called by a new name?

Robert, do you have the ability?

I think Rick might, maybe you two and a couple others should have a conference call?  As others have mentioned, one of these days ARC might just go "poof". Be a shame if that happened before the transfer of data.

The front page is a MASSIVE amount of data with its galleries and daily updates, etc. That’s where the bulk of

the Resource Center was intended to live and produce. It’s also where the bulk of the work lies. Trying to wrangle all that would not appeal to me. Moving it to a new entity would be problematic without consent or  agreement from Steve and that’s an improbability currently. The forum was just a side dish for the front page, but it’s where I spent more time. I only posted two galleries to main page. The content I was after was here. It was Steve’s vision and unless someone else has the same vision and devotion it would be so much easier to just form a new forum for the community and move on. Cut the time suck of the landing page. At this point I’m convinced it’s never going back to the way it was. Right click on whatever you want to save before it all vaporizes.

Dump the front page and just run the forums.

I'd volunteer as a moderator,  but don't think that I am smart enough to be an administrator.

This is what I said, Right enough hashing of woe and gnashing of teeth. How about people with knowledge of running a site and the time to try add their names to a list starting now. I am willing to help  mod a new site, but as a junior member.

No sir, I don't have any experience but have been reading on the subject for a while as I am interested in getting into it. There are several platforms that provide assistance and tools to help administrators. But if there is a will, there is always a way.

The immediate advantage to a new forum is whoever runs it will have the control over new accounts which should eliminate a lot of the spamming issues. It's my understanding Steve is the only one who can implement changes here which isn't helpful at all.

I am not computer literate enough to do any of what needs to be done.  I gave up coding my senior year of HS when we were playing with BASIC on Apple IIE computers and thought we were world beaters.  If someone taught me to moderate I would, but it seems there are plenty of skilled volunteers already.

Thank you!  As you can tell I have no more time to produce that than I do to finish models. I’m pretty sporadic at new content. Is what it is.  Just another creative outlet for me that moves at my pace.

Does anyone here manage their model clubs website? If you do then helping out managing a forums should not be that hard. It just takes time.

The (free) tools to make a forum are all online now. Do a Google search for "Create free forums online" and you will see lots of sites that will do the "heavy" lifting. I think I saw many forum hosting plans under $50/month. You also will have a small fee for the domain name as well.

Creating a forum online is not hard. It's just that managing it takes (24/7) dedication.

What we should do is to contact Brett at HS or Mike at Britmodeller and ask how they do their forum management. They could give us tips on how to get the process started...

I have looked into it too, and would love to start something new. However, it's more involved both upkeep and financially, than I can dedicate at this time.  While there are many so-called "free" forums, many do not have the storage size needed or require knowledge of databases and other internet skills.   Like everyone else, I don't mind helping but not in a position to take on the "leader role".

I also think that we need to really think about the information on this forum. While I am sure some of it is worth saving, how much of it is outdated?
