Captain Tyler
Here is a dedicated thread to something several users are talking about. The F-35 prototypes remain some of the most colorful to date, and the the first of the Bs and Cs have actually been sent to pasture already! Without further discussion, lets get into the suggested list. This list contains prototypes and the first few EMD frames. It does not contain the X-35s. F-35A -AA-1, "First Flight", NAS Ft. Worth, December 2006 -AF-01, 461st FLTS, Edwards AFB, May 2010 -AF-02, 461st FLTS, Edwards AFB, May 2010 F-35B -BF-01, VX-23, NAS Patuxent River, November 2009 -BF-02, VX-23, NAS Patuxent River, USS Wasp Sea Trials, December 2009 -RAF ZM135, 461st FLTS/17 Squadron, July 2012, First International F-35 Delivered -RAF ZM136, 461st FLTS/17 Squadron, August 2012 F-35C -CF-01, VX-23, NAS Patuxent River, November 2010 -CF-02, VX-23, NAS Patuxent River, May-2011 -168733, VFA-101 "Grim Reapers", NJ101, Eglin AFB, February 2013, "First Production F-35C" -168733, CF-06, VX-9 "Vampires", XE100, NAS China Lake, December 2016 NF-16A AFTI, 75-0750, Joint Strike Fighter Integrated Subsystems Technologies Program, October 2000 I will include as much detail as I can about the aircraft below! Please let me know if Im missing anything!
Captain Tyler
F-35A AA-1 is the first F-35A frame built. To my knowledge, it had no sensors, and was unique in that it had a single piece nose gear door. This aircraft is inactive, possibly retired. It may be in Lockheed Martin's possession at the plant in Ft. Worth. Edited October 10, 2023 by Captain Tyler
Captain Tyler
F-35A AF-01 and AF-02 These two frames were the first F-35As for the USAF and were delivered together. AF-01 is has been a reliable test frame, and is considered a favorite by many. It will no doubt be popular. Both aircraft are currently active with the 461st Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, CA. Note to Kursad: AF-02 has strange asymmetrical roundel placement on the nose. I recommend further research. Also, both aircraft have no EOTS installed. Instead, their housing is painted over. Captain Tyler
F-35Bs BF-01 and BF-02 were the first F-35Bs delivered to VX-23. Some of you may prefer BF-01s colors to AF-01s, which certainly make it one of the most striking F-35s. BF-01 was recently retired. BF-02 is most likely still in service. Note to Kursad: Both aircraft have no EOTS installed. Edited October 10, 2023 by Captain Tyler
Captain Tyler
F-35B ZM135 and ZM136 are the first F-35s delivered to the Royal Air Force. They both have the distinction of being the first F-35s delivered to a foreign country. Both aircraft are currently active.
Captain Tyler
F-35C CF-01 and CF-02 are were the first CTOL versions delivered to VX-23. No EOTS for these either. Edited October 10, 2023 by Captain Tyler
Captain Tyler
F-35C CF-06 168733 was the first F-35C delivered to a frontline squadron, being VFA-101. After the squadron is deactivated, 168733 was acquired by VX-9 as a test frame.
Captain Tyler
The last aircraft on this list is not an F-35, but an F-16. NF-16A 75-0750 had been a research and development aircraft a good portion of its life. Its last assignment was to test the Fly By Wire systems for the F-35, ending this mission in 2001. I believe AA-1 was used for ballistic damage testing and/or battle repair training after the flight test phase concluded. I worked system integration and flight test on AA-1 while is was based out of LMTAS FW.

F-16B MLU jet ET-210 (78-0210) was also used during JSF flight test support circa 2008 IIRC. Hasegawa released a 1/72 kit with these markings. https://www.f-16.net/g3/photos/32113 https://www.scalemates.com/kits/hasegawa-02095-f-16bm-fighting-falcon-jsf-test-support--259131 . Captain Tyler
I will add two aircraft to this sheet, seeing as there are too few F-35As. -AF-06 07-0744, 461st FLTS, Edwards AFB, December 2011 -AF-07 07-0745, 461st FLTS, Edwards AFB, December 2011 These were some of the first F-35As with unit markings. After briefly being at Eglin AFB in 2011, these two aircraft were then sent to the 461st Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, where they remain to this day. KursadA
I am working on this - it will probably take me a month or so to complete it. I will assign a product number soon. Thanks for the suggestion! I should set up a way to send me complete project suggestions like this.

KursadA
Wow - sorry, but things don’t move that fast. I am still working on the RF-8 and a couple other items with higher priority. I have drawn a few of the options but a full sheet is still some time away. There is also the issue of some of the aircraft being festooned with trademarked corporate logos - I am adopting a much more careful approach to these after some recent events and don’t know if I can include these. No rush! Definitely work your magic. Which particular aircraft are you having the most issues with?
Captain Tyler
The other thing we can do is do an abbreviated sheet of just the test line jets, if copyrighting for the prototypes is a concern. It would only be like 5-6 different aircraft, but it would be of subjects that have not been done yet anyway.
