CD48224: 1/48 S-3 Viking

Recommended Posts

Now on the front burner - I hope to be able to release this in the summer. Mostly the colorful, early service high-visibility jets, but a couple with the subdued national insignia during the transition phase to low-vis markings. I will try to cover interesting examples as usual, and a separate stencilling sheet will be available in the Basics lines. A 1/72 version will not be far behind.

Available kits are:

1:48 - ESCI and AMT/ERTL & Italeri re-pops.

1:72 - Hasegawa, Airfix, Revell (re-pop Hasegawa) plus a soon to be released Trumpeter kit.

Are there any plans to have an ES-3A or two thrown in the mix, along with maybe a later version sheet? I would love to see these in 48th but especially in 72nd scale.

Thanks for posting the link here : he has many great photos on Flickr but almost never mentions the actual aircraft type or use tags, so it is impossible to find them over there with my regular search methods.

VRC-50 US-3A "Miss Piggy" would be very welcome.  I've got the US-3A kit in the stash and lack of decals has been a big roadblock.

Agreed on this one.  There is nothing other than the ancient kit decals for the US-3, and they were from their earliest days when the US-3's were assigned to regular VS squadrons, so there are no VRC-50 decals anywhere.  I have this one in the stash unstarted for this reason too.

The US-3 is buildable from the standard S-3 boxing without much work at all, so a lack of kit isn't an issue.  Just need to smooth over the sonobuoy holes and plug the MAD port.  The kit wings are the standard wings with the the wingtip pods as extra parts, so no work needs to be done to have the correct US-3 wings.  Only thing a builder would need to do is source the cargo pods if they don't want to just use the drop tanks, and there are good resin Viking cargo pods from Black Dog.

The all white paint scheme would be a pretty neat addition to the display case.

  • 10 months later...

I am still working on it - my goal was to send it to be printed this month but it will have to wait for a while because of the massive reseller orders I will have to fulfil/ship in the next couple of weeks. I will post profiles sometime in the next couple of weeks.

The stencilling sheet is being printed and will be available as a Basics item similar to what I did for the F-111F.

Nice! Any perticular timeframe or nicely spread over the operational lifespan of the S-3? And only A's or mix with B's?
