Kinetic RCAF CF-104D Starfighter 1/48 Scale K48095

Recommended Posts

Hello ladies and gents,

This kit looks really great and I'm definitely going to pick one up... great review here:

That said, does anyone out there have a photo or loadout callout for this plane in 1972/73 timeframe?  I can't find anything on what the Canadian CF-104D carried at that time other than the fuel tanks.

Anyone have any reference material or can point me in the right direction relative to the 1972/73 timeframe for this Canadian version of the aircraft or mid to late 70's?

Thanks everyone.

-Greg

Never would say never, but in Canada (red tailed at that time) not much other then fuel tanks and more often then not, 4 fuel tanks. Then the 72/73 time frame in Europe, (white tails) the centre practice bomb dispenser was semi common on the CF-104D Mk2. And 4 fuel tanks.

Marking wise this would be the short lived English port side French starboard Canadian Armed Forces markings on the intakes and the CAF roundel last 3 time frame for the fuselage markings. The markings in Canada continuing red tail over bare metal and the Europe airframes a mix of white tail over bare metal and some overall green creeping in. Almost every airframe in the light green grey nose cone with black top. The overall black still a couple years out.

Prior to going green the CF-104D Mk2 would had a war time role of carrying a nuke on the c/l pylon, otherwise they had the MN-1A dispenser:

Most helpful gents... thank you!  Gives me some good ideas...

Shawn, can you take some closer shots of the ALL GREEN CF-104D?  Want to see how you affixed the ordinance on that one... I believe those are Mk82 Snakeye's?

Love how that one looks... 🙂

That is a single seat CF-104. Have not done a dual in just green........yet.

Here is a couple shots of that one. They tended to be painted green once the gun was installed after Trudeau (senior) said we would no longer use nukes for anything. Hence we had to learn how to use the Mk.82s as shown here.

Back to airplanes for a bit. 1/32 Italeri, with spare bin decals.

Did the two-seater actually have a combat role in the CAF?  For their designated role of low level nuclear strike, what would have been the point of flying a two-seat aircraft?

Only the Mk2 had the wiring for weapon delivery so they could have been used if needed, the rest were trainers only. The first AIM-120 kill was made by a F-16D with an empty back seat.

Not sure what “Mk.2” means in relation to the F-104.  I’m not aware of any such designation.

The two-seat F-104s had even less fuel than the single seaters, so flying one with an empty back seat on a combat mission would seem highly unlikely to me.  I have never heard of a CAF two-seater being used for a live nuclear alert mission.

The F-16 is a very different animal from an F-104.

The first batch of two seat CF-104Ds were Mk.1. For the most part they stayed in Canada from the beginning until 417 squadron shut down. The Mk.2 were more capable for weapons delivery and for the most part equipped the units in Europe. Near the end of service anything that still flew pretty much got sent overseas and eventually went to Turkey.
