Ben Hall's Sabre restoration had a Vee shaped windscreen all the time, and the aircraft still does to this day.   One of your images is of a video game skin.

Tony

The video skin is not accurate in the scheme. But if you look at these 2 photos, these do not appear to be Vee shaped screen? The lower frame seems to be flat straight across. Dai

I think I am not seeing right. The Vee shape on the photo of the silver bird has V shape. The one on the white is straight across. Maybe because of the angle that I am viewing that makes the V looks like flat across ? Dai

Xin chao, Dai

In the close up picture of the windshield you posted above you can clearly see that the glass is in a "V" shape NOT a flat piece of glass. The frame follows this.

In the other, more distant pictures, the angle from which the plane is photographed only allows you to see one half of the "V".  The far side half "falls out of view" behind the side you see.

Now that explains it ! Thanks ! Dai

Take  good look at the side windows on these windscreens,  there is a definite difference in the angle of the front section,  that is how to tell the different windscreens at a difficult photo orientation.

Greetings friends,

Primer is on. The challenging part is to get the slats adapted flush with the wing. You see I have some refinement to do. Note the silver drop tanks rather than white that I thought. Dai

Howdy modelling friends,

Getting closer to being done. Per suggestion of Tony, I bought this book and it has a wealth of information on the aircraft I am modelling as well as the world’s only flyable F-86A. Too bad it does not have any photos of the plane while it was sporting the all white Reno scheme . The wing fences will be added at the last stage of the construction. The pitot tube I just tacked on just for show. Dai

Those are modern antennas (VHF comm and ADF) and placement represents "current" or "later" placement.  Are you sure of this placement in the "Ben Hall" paint scheme?

I see there are antennas on the white version like in the top photo. I see the silver version went through some changes. Dai

Greetings,

The plane is now ready for the clear coat. The Intermediate Gauzy Agent yellows quickly after opened so I ordered a new bottle. Hate to have the yellow cast over pristine white coat of paint. Dai

Howdy all,

There is something to take notice on this kit. When you compare to the frontal view, the model sits very high and needs to be corrected. Even taking into the consideration of unweighted tires, it still sits too high. This is a good view to check the proper height. Dai

Hello everyone,

The plane is ready for the decal. The decals do not have the resolution like Cartogaft or with today’s offerings and you can see the dots. Also the edges are fuzzy and are not as sharp as they should be. It is perfect for casual viewing but if you want high resolution then this falls short of today's standard. I will let Draw Decals know to maybe check the resolution setting?  I feel very bad saying this but I want to point this out so you can have a honest review from an average modeler. Dai

PS: I wonder if it sports the wing walkways? I would assume so for safety reasons?

Hello all,

I am glad that I am able to find the photos on both sides of the actual plane. This morning I thought Draw Decals made a mistake as the US flag on the right side is reversed but actually it is correct. I have send the message to DD regarding my concerns on the decal's resolution and I will let you know once I get the answer. Dai

Hello all,

Continued on tonight. You MUST cut away ALL the text on top of the stripes because they are not positioned correctly! Let the stripes dried overnight before you add the text. Use plenty of water and with a soft brush coax the decals into place. Avoid any pulling action as that will stretch the decals and make them "snake"., i.e not straight. Of course I messed up so now I have to order replacements from DD. Dai

Greetings,

Almost done with this project. I will have to install the fuel tanks (NMF not white as I thought) and belly antennas.

Hello all,

Adding the antennas and prepared the drop tanks. I weathered a bit on these tanks as likely they were collected from scrap yard and weathered in contrast to the white airframe. On the airframe I carefully applied the pin wash (not careful enough) with light brown. I wanted to attenuate the panel lines without giving the whole airframe distressed look like WW2 fighters. Not easy as the white canvas attracts wash like CA!  Best to use water based wash for easy unwanted wash removal. I used Tamiya (enamel based) and I had to use sandpaper in certain areas to remove the wash! The drop tanks will be installed via white glue that gives a strong bond in non-stressed situation. Do not underestimate the bonding strength of the white glue!  Dai

Greetings fellow modelers...

The civilian F 86A is now completed. It has an unique confguration of slats wired shut and wing fences (taken from Academy F-86F).  It has NARROW chord wing. Draw Decals states it wrong on their website as wide chord! You can tell which is which by looking at the wing root. Wide chord overlaps the ammo door (panel line). The decals from Draw Decals. Now I have an unique A model in my collection! Dai

Hello all,

The Interior Green I used for the wheel welI for the civilian plane is Mr Color IG. It is much more yellow than Vallejo counter part. I happened to flip through the pages of the book that features the restoration of Ben Hall’s bird and the green is neither MC or Vallegio. It has the normal bright green (looks like non factory standard paint). I painted the inner sides of the landing gears covers white but they should be silver? Dai
