CF104
Hello All, I’d like to pick the brains of Mig-23 SME’s. I have the Caracal CD48228 USAF Aggressors now.. and then sheet. I want to build one of the Red Eagles Mig-23MS jets but it looks like the MS was only released in 1/48 by ESCI but I want something a bit more fresh and accurate. Is it best to use the M or MF kit with modifications to bring it to the MS standard? And this brings me to the next questions. What exactly is required to be modified to get a Mig-23MS version from an existing kit and what is the best kit to start with? I'm aware of the shorter radome and IR removal but have no ideas as to what else needs changing. Thanks, John Edited June 10, 2024 by CF104 clarification
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Besides the IRST unit under the nose being deleted, also move the huge ILS antenna to the centerline under the nose (was offset by the IRST unit on the M/MF). Also only one hinge on the tail instead of two. All 4 weapons pylons only carrying AA-2 rails (NOT AA-7's or -8's). It's the simple long-rectangular looking rails. And definitely not the huge pylons for the large AA-7's.
paulsbrown
Worth reading if you haven't already are America's Secret MiG Squadron: The Red Eagles of Project Constant Peg by Col. Gail Peck and Red Eagles, America's Secret MiGs by Steve Davies. I used the Trumpeter and a ton of aftermarket but the basic MF kit will get you there. No modeling details but particularly in Steve Davies' book there are some great anecdotes of the MiG-23 and it's awesome speeds.

I saw your Ready For Inspection over on Britmodeller.com. Very nice work. I'll be using the Trumpeter MF kit along with a moderate amount of aftermarket parts.
